Is that the one with "I love the men in white coats who come to take me away"? Since it was on the wall of my English class in upper secondary school. I think I wrote it on the back page of my notebook because it was such a funny poem.

I'm sending this to all my co-workers. That poem is awesome. If I had the balls I'd post it somewhere at work but I think that would get me in trouble with management just a little.

I saw this bird flying around when I was in southern Cali. It was quite large, and had these brillant red eyes. Can anyone help me identify what this species is?

Black Crowned Night Heron

I've seen these, and this looks like one. I would guess a juvenile, because it seems a tad on the smallish size -- though pics can be deceiving and there's nothing in this one to provide a sense of perspective -- and because of the yellowish cast to part of its bill.

Anyway you can find a very detailed description here:

http://birding.about.com/library/fg/blf ... icorax.htm

And your pic fits it exactly. Red eyes, yellow feet, white and black markings, down to the two white "filamentous plumes." In its winter range, probably down from Washington state.
I kill threads. It's what I do.

Thank you. The picture makes it look smaller then it really was. I would guess that it was an adult, or nearly so. Quite a striking bird.
