Cantrian Poetry
Cantrian? I think that's right. Anyway, down to business. During my many (Cantr) years of playing, I've come across about a dozen 'poets'. Characters that wander around, usually depressed, talking about how hard it is to gain acclaim and write good poetry... then they start quoting crappy song lyrics or semi-obscure dead poets. This alone I could brush off, I could even get past the fact that the real authors are never credited, but when to poet can’t even bother to quote it right, that’s where I draw the line. Mangled, stolen poetry is just… pathetic.
I realize that probably no one other than me is going to find this topic at all interesting, but it’s been on my mind for awhile, so I beg you forgive me. Now, in the effort of starting some kind of conversation… how do you feel about the ‘poets’ who’ve never had an original thought since they were spawned?

It's true, I hate it too.
Same with 'painters' who just steal other peoples' pictures from the internet and put them in notes.
Even "filking" I can barely barely stand.
I doubt there are any actual poets who play cantr (myself included), but it begs the question: If cantr's never had GOOD poetry, how do they know what it is?

The stolen pictures for painting things, does make me raise my brow- especially some of those MacGregorian paintings. But I think there are at least somewhat original stuff out there, one of Maily's, and one of Taowyn's comes to mind, and they both struck me, so I felt the need to source them.
It has added quite a bit of depth and such, to cantr, in my opinion.
However, I have tried being an amateur poet, short, original stuff. And also, one of my characters has begun writing anecdotes and tales.

There are people who write things from scratch. (And draw things.) Anyone can put a few rhymes together (even Gahak has done that) but to do it so that it actually raises feelings from the people who read it / hear it, that's a totally new thing. How many times have I mentioned Kronos? The last time I visited lakeside he wasn't around, kinda wondering where he vanished. I have to admit I rarely read notes in Cantr unless they are maps or short ones. So a lot of good stuff may be lost. But in the other hand I don't think I've ever run into ripoff lyrics yet.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is 'filking'?
And Cantr poetry is never really going to be that successful, as a really good poet should go and make some money with it, not waste it on Cantr.

Guess what! I have a char who is somewhat of a poet. Yes. His poetry is directly from me because I have no life and no will to place poetry in books and such. If you'll be kind enough not to steal it, though, I'd appreciate it.
Here is a little sample of Michael Lucian's poetry, named 'Life is Yours' for lack of a better one.
When you see the world around,
The sight, the touch, smell, taste and sound,
You see what they want you to see,
But there are more than things that be.
The smiles and joy are mostly fake.
The bait they give is what you take.
They all just want what is within
A feeling they can never win.
They see your joy and happiness
All their’s, they say, and never less.
Don’t give up the joy within.
Give to those, your heart they win.
See the world beneath their lies.
Your heart and soul empty inside
If these things you do not see
The ones to trust, the family.
Turn to them who win the heart.
Turn to them. They’re set apart.
‘Fam’ly’ are those you love the most.
Keep them at heart and keep them close.

You see what they want you to see,

When night and day meet, amazing things seem to happen...

Sorry Theorist...my character wrote much of the TBR song. Haven't you learned not to take credit for things you haven't written?
I also have a character along with someone else's character that writes a short poem after killing...typically animals, but possibly others...woohahahaha.

Sorry, that's pretty much a futile attempt to keep this thread going...
Notice how weak and petty we are / In the grand fixture we come afar / Hey we can't help it / No denying the prerequisite for love / Your very existence / You're the source of my substenance / Slow down take your time and feel the / Flow

Took you three years to answer that.
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:

What? My chars write wonderful poetry... well I may be biased. I think there's probably only one example on a note in an obscure spot left in Cantr at the present time.
But here's one totally original one he wrote once:
I think that there will never be,
A mushroom sweet as Marilee.
Though mushrooms grow most multitudinous,
I've not seen one so pulchritudinous.
*runs for cover*

Ah, I think I know who you are then. One of my charries had a crush on Marilee when she was a newspawn, but then he was harrassed by another woman and had to go hide -- when he finally recovered from the shock, she had already left. He went all the way to the forest to reach her but found out she had two other admirers already and he knew he could never compete with them...
Never loved another woman again.
