SOOOOOOOOOO.......America is planning to colonize the Moon by 2020. (And I am being serious; President Bush is already put a plan forth to NASA and have given them the funding to do this; there is some sort of conspiracy that America wants to settle the Moon before China does; who in their right mind would want to fight over or live on that piece of rock?)

Seems to me that it will be like Antartica is now... but they might start exploiting the natural resources?? What does the moon have anyway? I know Mars has plenty of crap that can be used... and the gaseous planets have fuel... what does the Moon have? I heard it may have a metal core.

I tought they would have backed off of the moon thing.

It was just a policitcal ploy to show that the goverment was thinking about the future.

Set a goal for four presidential terms from now? Can't be blamed for screwing that up like the present.

A 6-foot layer of rubber-foam insulation should suffice in case of an accident in any of the above projects. Unless you aimed the railgun at yourself. Actually, a conductive shell with an insulating inner layer would be better.

Alternatively, use common sense, standard safety precautions, and stay away from the microwaves unless you are a qualified RF technician/physicist (which I am not) or are utterly insane.

Chemistry textbooks are so much fun. I mean, to give clear instructions on how to produce NaOH, Chlorine gas, and hydrogen, all at the same time... to high school and college students? This is madness. Not to mention wherever one student learned that halogenated forms of ammonia are highly sensitive explosives. The incredibly low rate of accidental pyrotechnic, toxic, and electric suicide is a sure sign that this world is doomed.

And relax. I know someone who set of themite on his desk to see what would happen. Surely none of us are that deranged. Right?

There is a treaty in place to precent this.

That place is viewed as an emergency resource belive it or not.

America violates international treaties all the time... if this was the only thing that stopped that from happening then it is just a matter of time...

Now that Russia is marginilized America is ignoring the anti-nuke treaties and starting to develop tactical nukes and other weapons... etc.

It is very difficult too and accessing it would not line the pockets of the goverment or thier backers.

Well, after the US put a man on the Moon, the UN made a law that the Moon is International Territory and could not be claimed by any country. They later made a law that any planet or natural satellite could not be claimed by another country but it would fall under the UN as International territory.

Personally, I dislike the UN and I think it is full of BS. But that is just my personal view.

This topic is reserved for absurdly dangerous science-related stuff. Moon politics don't count.

There was a patent for a purely mechanical, muscle-powered weapon that could fire ball-bearings at rifle-bullet speeds. It involved a large disc spinning at high speeds, and the muscle-power thing is really more of a problem than an advantage. But if you built a big one, and hooked it up to an electric motor or internal combustion engine...
