The Finnish translation

Postby SekoETC » Fri Jan 12, 2007 12:42 pm

Moved from the In which other language could you play Cantr? topic.

The problem is that I don't know how flexible the translating options are, for example is it possible to store more than one version of things like "a man in his twenties" and such? since with correct grammar both the descriptive word ("parikymppinen") and the main word ("mies") would be declinated in some cases. For example, the exact translation for "you see a man in his twenties hurt a woman in her twenties" would go "näet parikymppisen miehen vahingoittavan parikymppistä naista". If we use a different structure that includes the word "how", "näet kuinka parikymppinen mies vahingoittaa parikymppistä naista", that allows keeping the subject in it's basic form, but there's still no fluent way of keeping the object in it's basic form.

Naturally with dynamic naming, all that can be done is adding a suffix in the end of the name - in some cases it will be correct, in others not. Many cases would require dropping or changing letters in the middle of a word and I doubt that's possible in any easy way. So the best way is to use sentence structures that have the variable words in the most simple form possible.

Yesterday I wrote a list of the animal names, though yeah, I should concentrate on the most visible things. The only thing I wasn't sure about is the scarab, my therapist and my mom have both used the word "scarabe" but I think it has a plain Finnish name. But what ever the word, it's still gonna give the wrong impression since Cantrian scarabs are friggen huge, judging from the amount of shell you get.

*) Even though the word "inventaario" is generally understood, it's a foreign loan word. In my opinion, something like "belongings" or "your own items" would be more clear in expressing that these are the things you're holding, which might make people realize the external nature of the objects tab.

Cantr II on hidastempoinen peli.

I'd appreciate some comments from a Finnish native (if we have any besides me). Sometimes it's hard to know wether to follow the original text strictly or to use structures that sound more fluent.

This can be handled by a grammar engine that I wrote. Unfortunately I don't have similar information for all languages, or information about how adjectives change, some translators never replied about that.

TO ANYBODY: If you discover incorrect grammar in the game, please send me a message about it, saying where you found it, what it currently says, what it should say and possibly what the rule for it is. Thanks!

Cantr scarabs are some kind of giant scorpion, right? Because I could kick a scarabs arse without an iron shield and a crossbow in RL...

And what's worse is there's still hundreds of the buggers... in each of the fiveish locations on this island... nearly ate me a live.

what, you don't know English? :?: oh wait..I bet he changed his sig.

It's not entirely ridiculous means it might be slightly ridiculous on some aspects (as in messing up the balance) but not ridiculous enough to call for instant rejection.

As if that's actually English...

I think it sounds better. Why use two words when there's one that covers the combination?
