No; because that would be similar to thousands of years ago when lightning was so weird and unexplainable that it had to be a god creating it. And diseases were punishments of god as well because they were also unexplainable. Until we discovered bacteria.

kinvoya: Interesting post, the one where you pose the 'what would you do' questions. I've been planning to write a page about this here:

*laughs beyond controll*

Can not prove nor disprove GOD.

Kill the God theme.

Will not add as I say god is dead as it (god would be an it) never exsisted.

Stripe the BS from your mind and what is left?
Maybe nothing but the will to live.

You have no idea. I think best as this state.

GOD JESUS means nothing. It Is but A legend of lies of many thousands of years.

That is of the old way. I have been an atheist no less than 28 years and no demonds posses me. I have free will over all. Same as the free will you can have if you wish it so.

Turns out those bacteria are tiny, teensy batteries that, in sufficient numbers produce a measurable electical output. The scientist working with them is breeding them to produce more electricity. Eventually he'll make viable biological batteries.

Clearly this is the first step in the evolution of the future bacterial hosts for our simulated lives. I'm really enjoying the bacteria theory! :D

@simulism: I'll give it some thought.

On a small side note, I was recently reading "Isaac Asimov's The Last Question." Which is rather thought provoking with regards to gods and computing.

Isaac Asimov was deluded. He was on prescriptions when he wrote his books. I'm all for "ahead of your time" writing but it's retarded to write about something you know nothing about.

You misunderstand. I'm not making a contrast at all. I was responding to HF wondering if it's just a choice of words.

I must sorely disagree with this, and also state that again you are being ignorant (I mean no offence, just to tell you my opinion) By not stating any proof or any slight evidenced of such.

And if you wish to talk about this anymore, i refurr you now to the "religion" thread, wich you alredy know of.

Would life, love, religion, science, etc. hold more or less mystery? Would you despair or rejoice (or deny)? Would life become cheap (as in Cantr) and death and/or murder lose it's impact?

What if you were the one who discovered the secret? Would you tell other people? Would they believe you? What if someone you knew and respected told you life was a simulation? What would it take for you to believe them? How meta does that make Jos? Maybe he created the ulta-program that runs our lives. That would be just like him. Maybe we're made out of legos!!!!!!!!!

I have no answers myself right now but I think this would make an interesting novel. Maybe (probably) it's already been written. Was the Matrix a conspiracy meant to throw us off the tracks by fictualizing a reality? Do I like to ask questions? You bet!

I just saw that this is explored on a TV program tonight called Science Investigators: "the potential use of bacteria in electronic devices." What if we are bactieria? It would give us a physical body in which to exist and be acted upon by the computer program/chemicals/whatever. It's unlikely that our experiences would just exist in a void and easier to manage than a brain in a vat. We multiply by dividing! = A song sung by bacteria in an old, old cartoon.

If some great evidence turned up that we're living in a simulation, I'd be skeptical that the world in which we really live is really the real world. There could always be another simulation on top of that. Recursive simulations. Embedded simulations. I'd be especially skeptical if the "first layer" discovered turned out to be something mundane, like e.g., my life has been a game, and the year is really 2020, and Los Angeles has solved all it's traffic problems. I'd be skeptical. But I'd still want to tell people. So, don't worry. You can count on me! If I find out anything, just ask, and I'll let you know.

Great posts, Russell and kinvoya :-) ...

Cantr III in 2010, with players upset about the graphics .... that sounds scarily realistic! :) We'll see whether it's right.

How many of your predictions have to be correct before we start worrying it's the next Nostradamus? :)

And kinvoya, I was indeed hinting at that in a much earlier post: the real interesting question is not whether we're simulated or 'played'; it is what effect that would have on morality, ethics, etc. So, do people have any thoughts on that matter? :)

I say it would completely destroy all principles of morality and cause widespread rioting, destruction, looting and vandalism
