Each of them was supposed to have access to each one of the wells, so three paths leading from every house and ending on each well. It's not possible on a normal plane, just try it. One of the houses or wells will be surrounded in such fashion that the third one cannot find access.

Yes indeed, the letters are the first two letters of the months of a year, in which I kept skipping one month.

February - April - June -Augustus - October - December
