Please see this thread: http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11859 for notes on how the Specialty Skills/Professions would work.

Skilled Midwife:
After children have been programmed it would be necessary to hire a midwife in order to conceive and deliver a child. Gestation in Cantr would have no set time and the midwife's special button would actually cause the appearance of the child character after notice has been given that a suitable player for the child had been found.
Prospective parents would pay dearly for this service.

Elros, would you check which forum the following topic is on?

Anyway, I doubt anyone is really working on it. And makind kids shouldn't be made too hard or no one will be doing it. I've rp'd giving birth once (in a freeform chatroom rpg) and I had to do it alone because the person who'd agreed to play midwife cancelled their participation just days before the big date. If assisting at birth would require people to be online while it happens, plenty of kids would be half a year overtime.
So prolly assisting at birth should be like dragging. In a way it is. The giving birth project would last a day or so, the mother wouldn't necessarily have to be online during it, and during the last hour(s), just about anyone could "drag" the baby out, which would make it go faster, increase chances of survival and lessen damage. Or if they were poor at it, it might cause more damage than good.

If children are ever implemented I hope they will be a very rare and special treat since they aren't needed for population growth.
Here's how I envision the childbirth process as facilitated by a midwife:
Two characters (not necessarily male and female) would have to be at least 30 years old in order to have a child (upper limit might be 70?). They would also need to find a midwife. The news of a midwife in a certain town would spread and the couple, hearing of one, might make a huge journey to find her/him. Once they have found the midwife they may or may not be chosen to be parents since the midwife can only facilitate conception and/or delivery once every few days due to tiredness. Also, the midwife might demand a huge fee or s/he might do it for free...whatever.
When a couple has been chosen, the midwife activates her special skill to make them concieve from a dropdown menu of people between 30 and 70 at the location. Gestation doesn't have to be the way it is in rl. It could simply be a time of anticipation and waiting for their child to be delivered to them. This way even two male characters could become parents on their own. It might take a long time or a short time to get their child but still they must stay near their midwife.
At conception a message would be sent to a Children's Committee of staff with the names of the prospective parents. Meanwhile, the committee would have been reviewing applications from players who want to play a child. Perhaps there could be a point system to determine who goes on the list. They try to make a good match without CRB potential. When a suitable player is found, a notice is sent to the midwife who then activates her skill again to deliver the child from the dimension where chars live before they come to Cantr. This child would be unlike other chars in that it would be much younger and have undeveloped skills. It would be up to the player to determine how the child would act and talk.

I like the midwife idea!
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."
