Weapon diversification

Postby Jos Elkink » Sat Dec 16, 2006 8:32 pm

Upon the recommendation of Surly, weapons are now going to be diversified in their reliance on the fighting skill or the level of strength of the character. Right now, the balance is always 60/40 - 60% skill, 40% strength. In the future this will differ per weapon or shield. So some weapons will become useful for weak skilled people, while others will become useful for strong clumsy people.

...And related to this , the characters physical strength is now visible in the character description - as with skills it is divided into 5 categories
  • Much weaker than average
  • Weaker than average
  • Average strength
  • Stronger than average
  • Much stronger than average

Now that Physical Strength can be removed from the equation, I am allowed to go about adding guns. Right, Surly? :D

:D

This is going to make things much more interesting and add even more things for my characters to spend time on... I like it.

Oh my gosh, you can see physical strength to other people's charries as well! This is so cool. Now you can actually imagine what a person looks like, at least how their body is built. I'm so happy for my much-weaker-than-average characters to be what they are, since that's a part of who they are. And for some I'm happy that they're only a bit weaker, not much. And most of the ones I imagined to be strong also are that, with one exeption, who has wished for a long time that there was a way to build training equipment. There were some surprises of people being stronger than I thought, but I can already integrate it into the mental image I have of them.

I like the weapon diversification but I hate that you can see how weak or strong other charries are. I don't think this is something that should be so easily seen by others, and I feel that it really interferes with the rp possibilities. I mean... skill levels are not apparent unless your charry is actually attempting to use that skill. But strength level is now out there for all to see. I would much prefer something that indicates strength by appearance, for example.... perhaps muscular versus... something else...

In a couple of my characters I was really surprised at their level of strength. Due to their particular roles in life it had not been that much of an issue. But in some cases I think this will just help identify easy targets. :(

I think that's far more realistic though isn't it?

I for one can't imagine Surly will be very pleased!

I am gutted for one character but at least he will know who he should and shouldn't tangle with.

Will the weapon differences be published, or will it be discovery and discussion or simply FOIG?

I like this. I mean, it's kind of weird for strength to have much bearing on something like a crossbow, where you really just need to have enough strength to lift it and to reload. I still think there should eventually be another skill modifier for each weapon, which would have more bearing than the general combat skill. After all, even though a dagger and a sword have pretty much the same method of operation (put the pointy end into the squishy things that scream and bleed), being a master with one does not necessarily mean that you have mastered the other. And then throwing ranged weapons into the mix...I mean, I can cleave someone in half with a claymore just fine, but damned if I could ever get an arrow to fly straight. ><

Will there be a way to strengthen your char? I have a few chars who are weaker than normal who'd like to be able to wield a bit better of a weapon, ya know?

There's a reason they call a gun an "equalizer", you know.

Strength is already improved when you fight or when you hunt
Suggestions for Furniture/equipment to build strength and fighting skills has been accepted but not yet implemented
