I like the idea of the desies, but it needs to be cut back a little bit.

There's different genres of games for a reason. Cantr is always going to be for the slower paced, imaginative gamer, especialy those that have a little thing for reading and writing. Yes, we do need new players, but it's important to keep the old players interested with new things to play around with.
I honestly don't see how this illness is all that big a deal. Food is everywhere. And who knows how long the sickness will stick with a character for. It might only be for a few days at a time, unless the character in question happens to be really unlucky. *shrugs*

Yes, but this new change is very likely to not only slow the stream of newcomers, but also cause a few "old players" to get fed up with it and leave. We need to keep in mind what the game is supposed to be. If it is not going to be aimed at a society simulator, then we need to stop advertising it is one, if it is meant to be a society simulator, then we need to start treating it like one and making the new implemintations aimed at that. Stuff like this new food thing does not help push the game towards that goal at all, all it does is slow progress, and add yet another useless struggle to the game.

If you really want this disease then it drastically needs to be reduced. Maybe just having to eat a few ectra grams a day, but the way it is now is ridiculous, and is causing some of my loved characters to have to fight very hard just to survive. That is not the point of the game.

Slow paced... How slow paced is it if you can't plan how much food your character should consume while you're gone for awhile? Why does a character need to hold approximately 5 days worth of food per day you're going to be gone if you want them to be relatively safe on eating while you're gone? Especially if you're not exactly sure when you'll be on, whether it will be 20 days or 50? How slow paced is it when you have to check in every single day if you're particularly worried about a character's food consumption because they eat more than they should and you can't control it? That changes Cantr from the slow paced game that you only need a little time to play each day or every few days; it changes it from being something you only have to worry about when something big happens to something you have to worry about all the time if you don't want your character to carry more than half a year or year's worth of food on them because they have a lot of other things to carry, whether it be because it's a lazy char that never built a home, or a char that travels all the time.

Yes, we do need new players, but it's important to keep the old players interested with new things to play around with.

I fail to see the interesting in this at the rate the food consumption is being reported at. I fail to see the fun in having to micromanage my characters even more. There has to be balance.

Now that's one thing that definatly does suck. :? Baaad, bad luck, Sanchez.

... How slow paced is it if you can't plan how much food your character should consume while you're gone for awhile? ...... Especially if you're not exactly sure when you'll be on, whether it will be 20 days or 50? ..... or a char that travels all the time.

Cooperation is a great life skill to have.. In and outside the game. It's good to put it to use. You've been playing for a long time, and you must've seen a someone slipping a sleeping char food at LEAST once. When you're not playing, it's largely accepted that the character is "sleeping", so don't make them travel for too long. Let someone know (in game) you're tired, and that they should keep you fed. Then you can rest your mind as a player, and have a good vacation :)

BUT, that does bring up a great point.. Is there any way for other chars to see that so and so is feeling faint (dizzy, etc?).

For the most part, I agree with the last bit of Elros' post, there, but definatly don't think it should be eliminated completely. Doctors! A point for Inn, to keep sleepers fed during their vacation sleeps.... A whole new aspect of the game! I'm excited. :P

I'm going to play my lazy card and my ignorant card.

What is the new disease? And is it the one that makes you feel faint?

Just a few comments:

1) If it's too easy to get food, then limit food in some areas, or make people eat more in general, don't just randomly make people eat a year's worth of food in one day. But I don't think it's about that (or not entirely), I think it's that they wanted a new disease to spice things up, fair enough...

2) If diseases are fun to have, let's have one that starts gently and gets slowly worse if nothing's done about it, not one that just suddenly removes all your food from your inventory in one go. I don't care how realistic it is to catch a food-version of meningitis and go from healthy to dead within a couple of days, it's not fun, it's not enjoyable to play, and it would really put me off investing time in any of my characters. Because, unlike real life, this isn't the only game/life I can choose, so I don't have to make the best of it - I can just leave.

3) The fact that no staff member has posted with "Oops, yep, we cocked up" makes me think that there *is* something you can do about it, and that therefore it could still work ok. I still think that it should start gently and then get worse to give people (eg those on their own or away from food) time to adapt to it, and then get worse.

So I'm still holding my judgement on this one. If my characters catch this randomly, and there is next-to-nothing I can do about it, then I will be annoyed. If they eat more than about three days' food in one go, I shall be annoyed. And if I have to micro-manage my inventories, I shall be annoyed. But if I just eat slightly more than usual and have time to figure out a solution, then it could be quite fun.

Anyway, if I do find out anything interesting about it, I'll be keeping my mouth shut and the temptation-for-others-to-CRB at bay :P

Is there any way for other chars to see that so and so is feeling faint (dizzy, etc?).

Yes - look out for what they roleplay. Although strangely, one character I saw stated that they felt faint, and then went off transporting tons of stone in and out of buildings

That's been tried fairly recently...

Agreed

I think it's planned and deliberate so therefore there will be no apology - just like other changes staff have to weather the storm for a while till everyone relaxes... maybe a few months later they will admit there was a mistake, or not.

Well the problem with that is while they're thinking you're all fed and comfotably asleep the years worth of food they've just given you could be gone within 4 days with no way for anyone to tell.

I agree completely with that, we should at least feel faint -before- we start chugging our cooked meat, otherwise its like our chars are thinking "ooh I might feel faint tomorrow...better eat 5 days worth of food just incase". But if we are stuck with this I would like to see it progress to feeling dizzy or queasy or actually being sick.

Until then I'm dropping all my food as soon as I notice that faint feeling coming along

Nobody is wondering about the cure?

We've been wondering about the cure for sneezing for over a year, so why should we expect anyone to have thought about a cure for this?

I don't like randomly striking, incurable diseases. It is, quite frankly, stupid.

The cure is a lot less interesting if it can't replace your food already gone.

Dylpickle---You sound like me 1 1/2 years ago. I used to always be excited about the possibility for new jobs/research etc for different types of chars. Unfortunately, the sneezing sickness hasn't truly meant that anyone really fills a role as a medic. I fail to see how it's going to do that for this new disease. Theres medical people out t here that still don't know how the hell to get rid of sneezes and that's not something that's very interesting to me. IE how the medical world evolves/how a medical person should be famous because he's sthe first to discover the cure., watching from an ooc standpoint to see how long it takes someone ic to discover a cure really isn't interesting either. Meanwhile the purpose the medic's been waiting for is obsolete. Research is cool. But he/she's not really helping anybody and half the time the town people find their own cure anyway. Noone really has to go in and see the medic, like they might if sneezing blood made you lose some health. Most of the time a medic sits there and does nothing but take notes, and that's about all they'll continue to do with this disease, that I can tell.

I don't have anyone with the eating disease. *Knocks on wood.* I hope to hell I don't ever get it either.

Edit: But hey, at least we know we're going to want to see that the harvester is run all the time now...;)
