Perhaps it was a quiet character. Some people aren't very talkative, so of course they would "talk" (if that's the right term) in emotes. What other option do they have? Doesn't worry me if someone uses lots of emotes - might mean I actually have an idea what they're doing.

I swear some of my characters might as well keep their eyes closed, because they hardly ever see anybody do anything other than point at each other and go in and out of buildings. Generally, they just hear people talking in a monotone with no body language, actions or emotion as they go about their seemingly robotic lives. :(

I think overuse of emotes are annoying too, (I mean it's one thing if something important is going on, but I've seen people that write entire paragraphs about the potatoes they're gathering...) but considering the location you should probably be greatful for any activity at all.

Or at least last time I had a char go through there that whole area was completely dead, maybe its changed in a couple of years though...

I haven't seen an annoying well-RP'ed character in a while. I saw a massive over-use of emotes, it was so irritating, they just literally talked in emotes, it annoyed me!!

May have been me ;), but I can't tell, what place was this in?

MULOF SOUTH!! GRR!!

LOL, now -that- one has a reason, hell, if I just came right out with her and talked straight away it would -completely- detract from the whole psychological breakdown she's meant to of had, so I am -not- apoligising for that one

Besides, there is no such -thing- as an over-use of emotes :D. I have at least three characters that for some reason or another do not talk much, but of course this is called sleeping, so for interaction you -have- to use many emotes. In fact, all of my characters emote more than the average character

Actually there's an entire topic where pretty much everyone agreed where if you emote too much, it's just annoying and crappy RP..
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

Though, i do have to say that there could possibly be a circumstance that alot of emoting should be used. However, the emoting should not by any means convey emotion, only things that can be seen from the outside (obviously, one could see someone is crying, but not why they're crying. They could be happy or sad, or have something in their eye).

Keeping this in mind will naturally reduce the ammount of emoted text and set the grounds for potential interaction to find out why someone is doing something that has been emoted.

Psymann, I'm not sure many necessarily agree with this. Or at least agree that it is a problem in cantr. Personally, I appreciate the creativity and effort that some players put into their characters, creating a picture with their emotes, and rarely do I run into a situation where I think that it is *too* much. Usually the opposite. I know that I often get very lazy or hurried and don't emote as much as I should.

Just thought I should offer that opposing point of view before the assumption is made that it is the collective opinion of all cantr players

*she brushes her hair out of her face and settles down at her computer, quickly bringing up the Cantr forum and clicking her way to the thread with the newest response. When she's sees that there's a reply to her own post, she reads it thoughtfully, mulling over the words for a long moment before seeming to come to a descision and clicking the 'reply' button, after which point she enters her name and password and then taps away at the keyboard, writing what might be considered an unnecessarily long response* Well, it's really a matter of opinion, I guess, but like I said earlier, long emotes may have their place in certain situations... *here she pauses, taking a long sip from a glass of cold orange juice* ...but it gets annoying when people write a whole paragraph for every trivial thing. *her hands pause, hovering over the keyboard as her eyes flicker over the words she'd just written, a slight frown of concentration on her face as she corrects a typo here and there, then nods in satisfaction and reaches for her mouse again in order to click the 'Submit' button, before standing up and stretching, yawning a little and leaving the room to continue getting ready for work*

And how often do you see that? I am suggesting that such a thing is very rare in cantr.... and more likely you get just the opposite.

I agree.
Emoting (or more preciselly, description and narration) is very rare IMO.
BTW, I don't like "modern" emoting (smiles), I prefer well written text. But I often write short things like "-smiles-" instead of a complete description of to who or how, just because I have no time.

Looks like a well-thought-out character to me. I suspect a correlation between "too much emoting" and "not enough war," but having never had "too much emoting" kill a beloved character, I may be prejudiced.

I disagree. Even well-written ones can have that effect. For example, there's a char I see talks all the time and punctuates his speech liberally with creative and interesting emotes, nicely done and impressive, but, done in a way that really limits responses to what he's saying. Fun to read, but self-indulgent. In a town that once engaged in lively debates, conversation now mostly takes place between two characters, and half of that in whispers. People really are dying there, from boredom.

The only problem I have with emoting is when they reveal their thoughts. That is only what bugs me.
