New Spawn Thieves

Postby deadboy » Sun Nov 19, 2006 11:21 pm

Well.... I was thinking about them the other day, and I thought, are they actually that bad? I mean, having them is undeniable proof that there are new players. They bring excitement to the game for new players (In fact I only continued playing for the first three weeks to see how far and how much I could get with my thieves, this was until I really got the point of Cantr and began to enjoy it for the game it is, and even up until they made the spawn limit I occasionally made a new one for a challange to see how stealthy I could be whenever I got bored of the game and wanted a new challenge beyond my already built up characters). They give an army or a guard something to keep themselves occupied so that towns do not simply fall asleep and die out, and for that reason make players live for longer. They breed evil characters, as an evil character is incosistantly played if you begin by RPing them as good to gain position within a town and then just randomly making them evil, whereas a newspawn theif that lives becomes a pirate etc (In fact I had a friend do this) which makes there even more conflict for towns to deal with which makes the game even more interesting. I mean, what was there really that was bad about them?

I say we get rid of this time respawn time limit and bring back the good old newspawn theif!

depends on my charator, a few hate newspawns altogether and a few would rather kill them that offer food, some just love to kill all things. then some would rather belive the thief needs those items or s/he might get killed by somone.

I disagree....for one thing a newspawn thief doesn't always mean a new player, and that's not what the 40 day rule is for anyway. The rule is there to make people care a little more about their chars and not kill them off just because they don't like there skills or spawning location or whatever. It's about suicidal newspawns, not newspawn thieves. Why shouldn't a person think twice before throwing their lives away for no (IC) reason?

Picking up all the notes and everyone is a lot different from seeing a sword on the ground and deciding to take a risk...the only thing the 40 day rule changes about thieves is that if someone wakes up in time to chase them, maybe, just maybe they'll decide they'd rather turn around then die over a bone shield. So you can still spawn a character and have them rob a town if thats their personality, but you can't just go through a dozen a day on a whim.

i think the 40 day rule is a bit extreem, i had a couple chars die for reasons beyond my control, like being in a town that gets raided or animals. or trying to leave a town to continue his journy...

but anyways is the 40 day rule for any chars that die or that get to a certain age becuase that last one was 24 and got killed for nothing, didnt break any laws, just bloodthirsy people.

It's for chars that are under 25, even though I'd probably prefer it be for everyone.

If your char was 24 you'll only need to wait 20 days though, I think it starts counting down once they hit 23.

its to late he already died, i can see the point in it but i am greatly opposed to it being for everyone, after the first couple of years your charactors are pretty situated in thier lives. so that being said i cannot complain about the 40 day wait, even though i probbly only had 15 days left.

No, what Marian was saying is that it is 40 days, or until that character would have been 25, whichever comes first. Therefore if your character just turns 24 when they die, you only have to wait 20 days for the slot to reopen.

I'm against, and always have been against, the 40-day rule.

It certainly gives the new players a reason to keep playing.

That's the only reason why I'm still here, the thrill of stealing from inside buildings.

Look- apply the 40 day rule to those who have played for less than 6 months, how does that sound?

If someone has the intent to steal notes then, you should have had backups, and a 40-day restriction isn't going to stop that.

It's just like a riot- kids with no socio-cultural understanding running into libraries and stealing books. Except- in this society- there's a lot of them. *sigh* lol.

When my last Charrie died it said I had 40 days to wait to spawn a new one but I only had to wait about 4 before the slot opened up.

And when the person dies in the next town over, or maybe on the road, ending up back in your town, someone needs to bury the body, someone needs to pick up the umpteen notes that have now become needless copies, someone has to tell the stolen notes and the restored notes apart since the thief may have edited them to contain shit (man, editing official notes can be great fun, as long as you do it subtly).

I wouldn't mind if the players would respond to pain but they don't, they just keep running until you've hacked them down. That's not roleplaying, that's just wasting people's time.

And it's not like the people who play them were only trying it once. Before the 40 day rule, you could start up to 15 provided you'd been playing enough, see how far they'll get, then spawn new ones right after the old ones die. If everyone was doing it then town guards had nothing to do besides chasing note thieves, every place would be littered with needless notes from ten towns over, you shouldn't bother to clean old projects since someone's gonna grab the output anyway, you can't give people time to pay homage to a dead friend since someone would steal their clothes...

I'd rather like to see someone work out a plan and carry it out with stealth, knowing that if you fail, you will lose everything. Newspawns got nothing to lose.

And it sickens me when people steal stuff they don't need. They'll end up dying anyway and then the leaders of the next town over take the stuff if no one's chasing. That's not called stealing, that's called finder's keepers.

I do enjoy playing a thief every now and then. It's all about knwoing when a chance is worth taking, and when not - the thrill is seeing just how much you can get away with, and the fun is trying to wriggle out of long jail sentences or death.

(I have spun a fair few tall tales in my time - it's amazing what people will believe  )

I would recommend it to anyone. It's fun - and it's the other character/player's own fault if they don't lock their stuff up properly...
They also keep a town on its toes.

Theiving just to get a character killed, for any reason, is something different. But an opportunistic thief/assasin certainly has their place in Cantr...
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

Yes. Exactly. Depending on how well the initial thievery goes, will generally determine the future trend of success that thief will have.

IE if they steal a Iron Shield, they are more likely to survive attacks on the road, and if they steal a bike and healing foods, they're almost invincible. Almost.

It's not like you'd have to run and risk your life. I have (had) several characters who pick up things for safe keeping, or just to have a look at them, and drop only a small portion of it, if any.

Yeah, I had a (Kleptomanic?) character who would steal anything she saw, and then just say, I'll hold onto this until I know who to give it to. If anyone asked for it, she handed it over, it not, she kept it. She got -really- rich. And I mean -really- rich. Anytime someone died hey presto everything the owned would end up belonging to her
