Rome was very impressive, but I've always been of the opinion that big-budget, american, hollywood stylisings don't fit well with that sort of material.
Troy, for instance, was an exceptionally accomplished film, and unlike others certainly conveyed the scale of the battle, but the slickness of the production didn't corresspond to the nature of the material.
Rome was similarly too slickly produced - it was possibly too nicely done...
Give me Spartacus and the old Argonauts over Troy and Rome any day - those films actually had dirt...
