Point at objects

Postby rklenseth » Sun May 22, 2005 9:29 pm

Can we have the ability to point at all objects like dead bodies, notes, tools, machines, etc...?

That could be helpful for a few different things! I would like to see it :)

Pointing at resource gathering spots too. This would really be helpful for communication between language groups.

Mind if I bump this? Hopefully this will be a minor thing to implement.

*I've seen three suggestions total suggesting to point at more things than just the buildings, paths, and the people (using words "point AND notes"). I decided to bump this one since this is the oldest and more broad at the same time.

I like this. You should be able to point at more things.
The following statement is not true.

Also, and this would probably be more difficult, to point in a certain direction. Combining this with the emote translation thing would help. (Pointing out to sea to indicate the direction of other islands.)

What would be *really* good is if you could use the names of anything you can see in your writing... then you can point at anything, or kick it, or stroke it, or looks at it, or admire it, or whatever you like to it...

...eg:

*goes over to the [dung] and kicks it* What a load of poo. Here, [psydkik], try some of this, there's more in the [House1] if you want it *laughs as he kicks some more in the direction of [psyborg]*

Which would come out, for me:

You: *goes over to the 563 grams of fresh dung and kicks it* What a load of poo. Here, psydkik (a man in his twenties), try some of this, there's more in the Cantr City Dung Shop if you want it *laughs as he kicks some more in the direction of psyborg (a man in his thirties).*

And would come out, for psydkik:

psymann: *goes over to the 563 grams of fresh dung and kicks it* What a load of poo. Here, psydkik, try some of this, there's more in the Cantr City Dung Shop (psyanide's in here) if you want it *laugs as he kicks some more in the direction of the sod who nicked my knife.*

Just a shame that that's already been rejected from a codign standpoint: http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11014. :(

THAT IS SUCH A GOOD IDEA
Psyman, that's a really good idea! So characters can see EXACTLY what you're talking about..
Though! it's kind of unrealistic. I don't say [posts] in real life, to have my mouth automatically tell you how many posts I have.
Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

Two updates to this:

1) Yes it is unrealistic as you're typing it, but it looks realistic as soon as you enter it. Have to think about the interface a bit - what would be handy is a table to one side that lists all the items in the area so you can scroll through them and click at the ones you want as you type. Question is whether it's possible to code this easily, as I think that was the problem before...

2) There is of course an error in the paragraph above. It should read:

*goes over to the [dung] and kicks it* What a load of poo. Here, psydkik, try some of this, there's more in the [House1] if you want it *laughs as he kicks some more in the direction of [psyborg]*

Because of course what you say should not use these names because everyone hears the same thing, only what you do because people only know their own names for objects/people you interact with.

Sorry for that error. Fixed now :)

Oh, wait, just to avoid confusion - I had not read the thread carefully before moving. I moved to accept pointing at a lot of different things - the proposal the subject line suggests. I do not approve of the idea of using all those names in your regular text.

Just pointing to objects, projects, resources, ... similar to currently pointing to buildings and people.

Oh well. I'll have to take another rejection on the chin then - it did suprise me a bit that you'd seemingly changed your mind

At least I got a bit of support along the way anyway, thanks guys. :)

psymann

PS and I got it wrong again  - I really should proofread my posts in this bit of the forum since I can't edit them afterwards I realised! That'll teach me for posting when I have 5 mins before I have to leave the house! Anyway, the [House1] bit was also wrong, because it was being said. So the dynamic entries should just have been the [dung] and the [psyborg] as those were the actions on objects to which we all give different names. Psydkik and Cantr City Dung Shop should have been written normally as I said them...

"I don't say [posts] in real life, to have my mouth automatically tell you how many posts I have." - this is of course right, so the idea would only be for things you do, and not things you say - I'd stupidly forgotten this in my example... Anyway, an unimportant point unless someone someday in the future has time to put in the work to code it.

psymann *admits defeat... for now  *

Pointing at animals would be great too. I miss that when trying to communicate local hunting regulations to strangers who speak other languages.
