Well at least I saved one person.

But Bowser that means I need 15 votes, because each one of my characters has a different version of 'morality'...

To take a similar view point...

I introduced a person to the game, I thought that they would enjoy the game. I found out that they spawned in a location, not so far from one of my charcaters, and they were not having an easy time of it because of the regime there....

Did send my character, over supply them with an iron shield, sabre and enough food to get somewhere a bit more hospitable?

No, because as far as I am concerned that is a direct CRB.

I can see avsolutely no difference to help a newspawn OOC is plain wrong....

You as a player, have to have your idea of what is right or wrong, good or evil, in order to make your characters different. I am not asking your characters whether they would feel responsible.

I am asking you if you as a Player feel the newspawn in my hypothetical situation is your responsibility because it is your fault he was spawned there. From your post, I see that you feel it is a CRB to use that info to influence your actions. So you should have answered no. You do not get a vote per character.

I am quite convinced that our characters do not know the facts about where newspawns come from. Maybe by now, they know newspawns only pop up in populated areas.

I feel a responsibility to help them along and this happened way before I entered into the players department. Those first few days are when we can catch someone's interest in the game and either possibly either lose or gain a great roleplayer. So I feed and advise them in hopes of keeping them around the game.

In the French world, it's so much easier. We know the newspawns are there because of us being there and we know if we don't help them, they will die. Those in more civilised lands with more people have the option to help or not to help, but bringing the new person into our protection isn't an option. None of us will survive if we don't.

Isn't the crux of this topic about how newspawns are perceived by Cantr characters?

Are they inextricably linked to other characters? - as all newspawns take characteristics from two others - so would a newspawn at a location with only two other characters be their 'offspring'? - 'their' newspawn...

Or are they new characters which appear seemingly random, and who have no links to anything or anyone else.

I would usually opt for the second choice.
Whilst the sapwning mechanism requires two other charcaters, this is not readily apparent in-game, nor does it require any other action from two characters other than 'being'.

Most responsibility felt towards newspawns comes out of a community spirit. In larger communities, newspawns are often seen as the responsibility of the organised community at large.

Do Cantr characters know that their mere presence brought-about a newspawn?

Newspawns appear at seemingly random, with no direct input from characters, at the ripe old age of 20.
I can't see how this would lead to much 'connection' or responsibility felt instinctively for newspawns for two characters alone at a location.

Whether or not the characters take responsibility because they care for those who are helpless, is an individual character choice.
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

Speaking strictly as a player:
"No, I am not responsible, but I would see what I could do".
I've played Cantr a few times in the past, and never lasted long because in that past it seemed that other players merely viewed spawns as target-practice.
I recall one case where basically one of my spawns came into existance and got turned into shishkebab before I could type out "Please don't kill me", and such events were what lead to me, as a new player, considering it a waste of time and effort to log in again.
But somehow, once every few months, I just ended up taking another look.
This time around, some of my early chars actually managed to build up a history.
My first char that I made on this account is still alive, he's not wealthy, he had a rough life, but he's got a history now.
And apart from a few starvations or victims of wild animals, I can actually see possibilities for any char I could make, without having to fear that I have to leap to a road as soon as I spawn a new char, and prey that everyone else in the spawnplace is asleep.

So, with those memories of being killed shortly after spawning, or for a period after that, spawning in places where hardly anyone seemed to care about spawns, if I was in a position where I would be one of the few that made a spawning happen, I'd see what I could do.
If it's someone who starts by grabbing my prescious bones and dung from the ground, then the least I can do is give him a burial  but in general, I'll try to at least give them some pointers, and if possible, some food or basic stuff.

Now, hypothetically speaking, if you landed in a spot that only had grass, would you bogart it?

Well, as a person I would help him regardless of the situation. However my character would only bring him on the boat if he agreed to join the Order of Arvad(we need new members badly). Even if he didn't, to ensure good diplomatic relations, I'd get him the knife.

Whatever my character did, I'd feel enough responsibilty as a player to make things interesting for that newspawn. Even if my char decided to use them for target practice or exploit them for cheap labor I'd be sure to RP it as much as I could.

I voted I would take them with me on the boat (if they fit, anyway), because I wouldn't want to leave them on an empty island all by themselves...I'm sorry but 'single player' Cantr would suck.

I never admit when I screw up. I just find someone else to blame.

It's just amazing when someone gets past the BS and hits the nail square on the head with one shot - when it is stated so well that I read it over and over.
