Travelling Suggestions

Postby Anthony Roberts » Tue Feb 03, 2004 12:01 am

I was just thinking of some ways to improve travelling between destinations.

1) Passenger and Driver status for two+ people vechicles: The first person to move the vechicle is designated "Driver" - everyone else becomes a "Passenger" - People with the passenger title, can then work on some small projects while the driver takes them elsewhere. In reality, if you were sitting down while someone was driving, you could be working on a tool or something. Perhaps it should be in the game?

2) Grouping. I'm sure this has been suggested or thought of, but, never hurts to suggest twice. Have people group when each other, so when they travel by foot, they go the same speed as the slowest person - they all arrive at the location at the same time, and then break company each time they reach a destination. "You see person1, person2, and person3 arrive at place together from that yellow road"

3) Projects while walking. It's possible to read while walking... of course, it's DANGEROUS to do that, but even still. Perhaps if you were to work on a tool, you'd be forced to go only 50% of your maximum speed, just to be cautious while moving? Of course, if #1 is put it, this penalty wouldn't be needed while being a passenger or a vechicle.

4) An auto-logging feature in your inventory, perhaps as a map. It would mark down locations you've been at, and you have the ability to add comments to each place on the map. Would cut down a bit on all those maps on the ground, maybe.

5) Shoe type clothing should increase speed. No more stones jabbing in your soles, sand and ashfault burning your feet, etc.

6) Mind Altering Foods (What does this have to do with travelling?) - Perhaps there should be Coffee Beans, make you nice a peppy, to increase walking from location to location only temporary (Maybe for about 5% total, increase speed)

7) Er.... can't think of anymore.

Any comments, suggestions, additions, critism - post it! :)

1. Sounds good, althought the projects would defintly have to be small. Unless of course you were in a van or something.
2. Cool idea, I like it. Makes sense.
3. Again, the tools would have to be small things, like hammers or screwdrivers. Might be a bit of a programming challenge thought, cuz you'd have to move the project to the next town and such.
4. The auto-logging feature won't work I don't think. The point is that your supposed to remember all of that kind of stuff, or make a map. Not have the game do it for you.
5. Yeah, when clothing purposes are implented that should defintly be one of them.
6. Yep yep, coffee gooooood.
I just can't stop coming back....

Yeah I never thought about that, having the tool move from location to location. Then again, probably can't happen, there'd need to be another variable for your action - since it will show that you're moving from place to place already, it can't have both (It would overlap).

Auto-logging was just a quick idea, wouldn't think it would work anyway :P

I'm pretty sure you can make projects in vehicles.. I made a sabre on a bike once. Although driver status should be made because it's pretty hard to drive and do other things...it could be disastrous. (see Keri and Stefan Go For A Ride, part 1.)

Anybody who wants the transcript of either of the Stefan/Keri adventures, PM me! =D

I got thinking about this again. Grouping doesn't seem to be happening, so I thought of a simplier approach. What about a nice little button that copies the persons actual speed into your variable? For those not knowing what I mean... your speed is calculated through weight and vehicle type and the percent speed you choose and some other junk. It's all then put into a variable, and you walk at that speed down the road. Now, if you're walking faster than someone, I think you should have the ability to click this button to match their speed exactly, so you're always walking with them (Or infront or behind, whatever, but at the same speed). Of course, if you're walking slower, the button would only work if you're MANUALLY going slower (Ie: You made yourself go 80% instead of defauly 100%, clicking the button makes you go faster to match their speed, and your speed becomes 92% or something)

And even BETTER approach (But more programming) would be the same button as above, but instead it would stop you completly, or make you go as fast as you can, and as soon as they are right beside you, your speed matches with them, so you're always beside.

Can either of these be possible?

Yeah that would be great if they could do that. I'm tired of turning around and adjusting my speed just to travel with someone.

User Clicks "Match Speed"

If CharactersSpeed is Greater Than OtherCharactersSpeed Then
- CharactersSpeed = OtherCharactersSpeed
Else
- Send Error: "You can not catch up, they are walking too fast"
End If

Of course, that's pseudocode. But it's just as simple in any language, just like that. How would that be difficult? Adding the button would take not even two minutes, either.

But is that how speed works? What if the speed is stored as percentage of maximum speed?

It very well could be, I wouldn't know. (I'm not allowed to play with the Cantr code :D)

Each person walks at a different speed, however. Even if two people both walk at "100" (Percent), chances are they both will have different, actual, speeds, and that is how they walk. And, this speed has to be stored somewhere... even if changed into some other form of variable or digit, because their "actual" speed would need to be calculated first before toying with it, correct?

So, just have it keep that actual speed in a termporary variable or somesuch if, currently, it's overwritten by something (Which I doubt, I believe every turn, it moves you based on your "actual" speed, and doesn't recalculate it) - so, I think it HAS to be there. So, in theory, it could be done.

I don't much like the autologging idea. If you want to remember where you've been, you should have to actively record it, like in real life.

*Stab* This ISN'T a new thread. That idea was from February. Feb always bring out bad ideas from me. And back then I didn't care for mapmakers. But now I do, having one. But we're not talking about those ideas! We're talking about Following and Travelling :P
