*blinks* No, I'm not much into new games because I'm really bad at computer games and new games are too expensive. My name would not normally be written in katakana. If it was, it would be ウエムラ ショウ. In hiragana, it would be うえむら しょう. In kanji, the way it would be written in almost all circumstances, it would be 上村 翔. Most Americans tend to get my first name wrong one way or another. A tip is that almost no words in Japanese end with a small character. The deeper reason behind that is that most vowels in Japanese are long vowels, the ones that get bars over them in the phonetic alphabet. Many signs in the Tokyo area, where almost all signs are bilingual, spell "Tokyo" with the long vowel marks because too many businessmen mispronounce it. In English, vowels tend to get rounded off with a "schwa," a dull vowelish sort of sound. Japanese doesn't do that, and a common problem with pronunciation of Japanese by Americans is that they use the schwa where it doesn't belong. Another problem is that they stress syllables. Japanese doesn't stress words very much, but most Western languages do.

If you want to learn a new language and alphabet, learn Quenya! It's less useful and more fun. http://www.ardalambion.com

LOL, I was able to work around the broken link... no thanks... I think I will work on the real languages I haven't mastered yet before I delve into fake fantasy ones...
To each his own.
LOTR was good... but I'm not a fanatic really, was kind of turned off by the whole Hollywood machine nature of the toys etc.. SW same... kind of disenchanting...

I've been working on Quenya off and on for a while now--it's great fun.
I've had that site bookmarked for over 2 years now

Sho, if you're interested in Tengwar (and why wouldn't you be?) , download the Daniel Steven Smith Tengwar fonts and the YaTT transcriber tool. It's great fun.
I'm not dead; I'm dormant.

Yeah, I have them. I read the LotR books about two years ago, have been a fan for about half that, been wanting to learn more for half of that, and actually been learning stuff for half of that. In a couple of weeks/months/years/lifetimes/eons I hope to be able to understand that Quenya piece. Only 12 chapters of the course (http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/qcourse.htm) to go. . .
