Sex assignment

Postby Jos Elkink » Tue Feb 03, 2004 12:01 pm

Following a very old suggestion by Ronald - for those who still remember him - work is still being done on developing genes in Cantr. This is a slow process, especially since virtually all programmers are on very low activity these days, but it is still ongoing. One typical 'gene' would be something that is already implemented in some way: sex. Right now, when you create a new character, you can select whether it should be a man of a woman. Other genes are going to be randomly assigned when they are introduced.

Should sex also be randomly assigned?

Right now, there is 70 % men, 29 % women.

Of course, it would be difficult to create a name when you don't know the sex of your character yet, but I think it would be better to assign a name once you're playing instead of on the form. Starting a new character would thus simply be one button - no form.

Please see this entirely separate from babies - babies will, once introduced, have random sex and genes and no name, etc. ... this is about the twenty-year-old starters.

This poll is not binding - I am just curious how people would react to such a change :) ...

I said "no", simply for naming purposes. Names in Cantr don't have RL sex associations, but it'd still be kind of wierd if I created John William Hurtz and it turned out to be a woman.

The original name you give the character can be changed before you introduce yourself so that's not a problem. Jos even mentioned getting rid of filling in an original name and just starting generic so that you can change it to what you want after they're started.

I say "yes". Even though I like being able to pick the gender and I have more female characters than male, apparently with the choice there isn't going to be balance. That sort of messes things up if babies are introduced.... but without babies, it isn't a problem.

I voted yes, but this might be a bad, considering all the people that don't frequent the forums, and it is a bit more of an "intrusive" issue than others... it may put a lot of players off, but that is just pure speculation on my part, I have no data to back it up.

i voted no, cause this could make it hard for female and male players who cant really act like males, visaversa have an extremely hard time playing that character. but its just my view.

I definately agree with JJ, it's hard to act like the opposite sex if you are just plain straight. It would be fine if there was a choice displayed:

Male
Female
Random

That would be suitable.

Come on guys, this is roleplaying! :) ... You see females around you all the time, why can you not play one? :)

And I definitely don't believe it has much to do with straight/gay division, but that's another matter ...

I voted no on random. I think you have to be ready to RP the opposite sex. There is enough to deal with from when you get spawned.

That being said I do not run my female characters any different from males one. But they do get treated different by other characters.

I voted yes, even though I don't play female chars at all except for possibly 2 ages and ages back. I probaly wouldn't be able to play females well either, would end up with a lot of masculine women, but the idea of random assignment appeals to me.

:?

I like the idea of having an option of whether you'd like it to be random or no.

I always have a problem deciding myself which one I want to make "this" time anyways. Random would be good for me.

But i also can guaruntee that random is not good for everybody. I've heard stories bout how people let a character die because they don't want it to be involved with another character; BECAUSE of the fact the persons behind the player were same sex etc....

Personally I don't care who you are, male or female. XD

But, some people do care, care so much they let the character die.

like an instance would be, 1 girl-gets a girl char, and another girl gets a guy char.....If they happen to find out its both girls, sometiems the girl playing the male will drop the character in a hearbeat. (Note that the stories I've heard usually come from the male end...lol) But it happens and it's kind of sad I think.

But you aren't asking me if I think there should be an option for random. Since I have to choose, I'm going with Yes. I think people should be open to playing a character no matter the sex of it. :)

I have several female characters...but they do end up being..not butch, necessarily, but significantly more self-sufficient and tough than average, I'd say.

Still like playing them, though.

My only char that I won't name is my only male char. I won't name him specifically because he wants to have a family, and I don't want that to be possibly affected by another player knowing that my char's player is female.
It'd be sad if his psyche was screwed up 'cause a future mate dropped dead suddenly for a reason that wasn't legitimate in the IC world he lives in. Twould be a shame.

I vote no because we don't need another reason for newspawns to commit "suicide by cop" and cause confusion.

how about spawned char's get to pick male female but babies when they come in get the randomised end f the stick cause nobody can choose what there gunna be born.that way they can make the char who they are and if they want to have a *cough cough* umm alternative lifestyle char that's up to them but i've found it's fun at times to play my odd female char as a complete flirt and see the reaction's you can get hehe
