"Prepare to Repel Boarders! Arr!" - or "Attacks at Sea"

Someone mentioned moving between ships at the same location before, well to extend this:

When two ships meet at sea you could use grappling hooks to attach one ship to another and stop it escaping, perhaps while grappled ships cannot move.

Then you could move between ships and attack the occupants.

To get away the occupants would have to remove the grapples: a project that works like picking a lock, or maybe like a normal project the progress representing untangling the grapple.

You could allso attack over a small distance using missile weapons to fire between ships.

The only troble with this is, in my opinion, that you can try and get rid of the grapple, working on the project, and fight at the same time, but in RL life fighting and trying to perform another task like that is next to impossible, so the solution I see is to make fighting a project where two combatants become engaged in a swirling melee. (finer points of how a system like that could work would probaly be best discussed elsewhere, in another thread)

(BTW, guess who saw "Pirates of the Carribean" last night ;) )

That would be nice, especially with all the boats that are being built now. Maybe boarding a boat could be a process like docking, except you can't attempt it unless you have a boat hook for short distances, or a grappling hook for slightly longer distances. But this should take at least 3 people to attempt, one person shouldn't be able to do it.

yeah, or it is very hard to do alone, very very hard.

What about seeing other ships? I don't know what it's like sailing, but I don't think you can see other ships, only lighthouses.

Perhaps a spyglass ought to be made that by having in your inventory allows you to see a long distance so you can see other ships and go towards them to..umm... say hello

When you are on the water you can see other ships as a black dot on the water...only if close enough to show up on the location map of course.

so seeing them isn't a problem then, what about a spyglass giving you a different scale, or larger map to look at? or allowing you to look at ships and see their heading, and relitive bearing?

Perhaps spyglasses could give you relative bearings off lighthouse as well, or do you already get those?

(Is it obvious I've never been on a boat? ;) )

If you could board another boat from your boat than you could make floating prisons out in the middle of the water for criminals, that way there wouldn't have to be guards.

No Pirates!!! I'm a sailordude. Gotta protect my collegues in this game u know!

Serious mode: I love that Idea. Sail off with a ship full of loot and nailing the other ship's survivors onto the decks of their sinking vessels. Or take the vessel and prisoners back into port and selling the prisoners as slaves. Idea? Program slaves? Very old and humanlike idea, like murder, greed and war.

What's to stop the prisioners sailing away? lol "er, captain, the theives we put in prison have stolen the prison

LOLOLOL

I'd be happy just being able to kill them all, take their stuff, and burn their ship  Thing is if you try to sell the ship or slaves from it, unless you beat their background out of them, you run the chance of trying to get rid of the merchandise at a place where they are known. Better to leave no evidence other then your ship sitting a little lower in the water

I love this idea!
Perhaps you should be able to construct yourself a wooden leg (300 grams of wood?) and a hook (50 grams of iron)...arrrr!

You'd have to chop your leg and hand off first... (project cutting off leg and hand finished. you got 100 gr of flesh).
