Der Untergang
Michael Collins (one that is at the same time romanticizes the irish rebellion and assaults the romanticizing of it)
Father Damien
1492 (or the story of one of the greatest men in history, and the envy, hatred and aversion to new things of the common man)
and on a perhaps lighter note, the Meaning of Life also made me go 'Hmm' and I still wonder if anyone could ever make something as funny as that again.
Films that make you go Hmm..

Children of Men
Watched it last night, took me a couple of hours to go to sleep. Very scary, because it was made so well and seemed so realistic. Probably particularly thought provoking if you live in the UK...
I love dystopian films!

I can't wait to see that film. It looks very good and actually appears to have some substance to it unlike many films these days. It might even be an Oscar sleeper expecially since there haven't been any real Oscar worthy films this year from Hollywood. Most of the Oscar-buzzed movies thus far have fallen way lower than expected for example "World Trade Center" and "All the King's Men". Unless the buzz about "Flags of Our Fathers" and "The Departed" is correct then I think this will be a very bad year for films from Hollywood. The only other film that has potential is "Apocaypto" but the film industry doesn't like Gibson too much especially after his drunken comments so like "The Passion of the Christ" I think this film is going to ignored. I think the Oscars are going to be full of Independent films just because like always the Independent film industry has once again bested Hollywood in many areas for example "United 93". But many of the great Independent films will be ignored like usual. Just the nature of the beast but I do believe that the future of film is Independent and unless Hollywood realizes that most people don't want the same crap recycled to them over and over again then I'm afraind Hollywood will continue to sink in both quality and the amount of money they're getting from people.

The trouble is I can't see a US audience, even a sophisticated one, such as yourself, quite getting some of the point. I haven't read the book... yet... but something tells me the focus on immigration perhaps didn't take the form outlined in the film. I want to go and watch it again... which is increibly rare for me!
Rather like the 28 days later, some of it works so well because it refers so closely to things familiar to its audience. There are some really great things that keep the 'hero' from being a hollywood hero like doing a runner without adequate footwear, a car chase that involves three bump starts and more that I wont say in order to spoil it for you.
Nice that for a change we get the release months before you, rather than the other way round.

V for Vendetta was really good...
Kingdom of Heaven was boring though, in my opinion. (partly because I was expecting a lot more fighting)
Collateral, Pay It Forward, Magnolia

"The Jacket" was intersesting (it had Keira Knightely in it
) though I think it lacked in some areas. Better movies along this line are "A Beautiful Mind" and the 1970's version of "Cybil" which both of those are based off of true stories and actual mental illnesses. But then again "The Jacket" was sci-fi.
