Laws for Seaside Lake Forest Hills North, aka Playertopia

Postby Maelstrom » Mon Sep 25, 2006 2:33 am

I wondered what laws / rules the players (not necessarily the characters) might want to have in their perfect town.

I think most laws are summarized by the first one I'm putting on this list.

I'm curious to see people toss out suggestions or actual laws that they've run into IC that they enjoy or detest (and why).

SEASIDE LAKE FOREST HILLS NORTH: TOWN LAWS

#1 Don't be an ass. We'll beat and cut you if you are.
[again, seen something very similar, big fan of it]

#1a: No whispersex. You'll be beaten within an inch of your life if you slip and disgust everyone. Get a room.
[note, there is a town with a law like this! love it!]

#1b: Speak clearly. By "clearly" we mean:
    Use punctuation
    Use whole words
Put at least marginal energy into spelling
    Do not use Leet Speek
Failure to do so will be dealt with as a violation under law #1.

#2: Act like a Person. See the subcategories of this law for clarification.

#2a: Don't blurt out things with 'date codes' tacked onto them and expect they'll be taken as fact. You may be treated as violating the First Law for repeated violations of this.

#2b: Do not begin any public sentence with OOC*
* - unless you are making a strangled sound, and choking
(i.e. OOC! AWCK! GGGGGGHHTTT! *he falls over, turning blue*)

#2c: Be injured and Die well. If bleeding and standing at Death's Door, you should not be at full capacity to run your mouth, declaring the travesty of, well, anything. Gasp, bleed, moan, grapple, collapse, do something, other than stand there like you didn't just get stabbed with five sabres. We know you did! -WE- stabbed you, and we can tell you're all bloody and stuff. Act like it. You're going to die anyway, you may as well do it with style.

#3: Open your eyes.

#3a: Evaluate your new surroundings upon spawning before uttering a word.
It's not a great idea to begin whipping up a bone knife when the notes on the ground warn you that to stay outside is certain death, and there's an open building nearby, and well over 100 pairs of beady little eyes staring from the woods around you, mounted in voracious animals waiting to eat you when it's time.
Likewise, suggesting that your new town make a bus to ferry everyone to the nearest source of [insert resource here] might be a bit odd when the higest form of technology visible to you came from one of the things trying to eat you after it was killed by being bashed in the head with its brother's legbone.
Attempting to establish a fully functional democracy when still trying to simply survive does in fact fall under the category of violating the first law. You also don't know any better, so shut up.

#3b: Play well with others. This is to say, if you look around and the place you've have the (mis)fortune to come into existance in has a certain character / feel to it, perhaps it might help if you put an ounce of energy into playing along, instead of trying to 'win'. Note, failure to follow this simple suggestion will likely rapidly result in your breaking The First Law, and therefore, being broken yourself.

#3c: Follow the Rules. There are rules written down pretty much every place for a reason. It's so you'll follow them. Note that just because something isn't written down as a "do not do ..." doesn't mean that's okay. This isn't America. The justice system here likely is that trio of people with claymores and iron shields, looking bored. Keep that in mind.

We hope you enjoy your time here in Seaside Lake Forest Hills North. Please keep your hands inside the vehicle, and keep your seatbelts in place at all times.

agreed, these are very OOC laws.

1a could be rewritten as viable law, but "wispersex" is an ooc term, a no public sex, law would be okay.

1b ruins possible character traits (any form a speach impedament or hyperactivity disorders could be punnished under this law) and in cantr you are speaking not spelling, anything spoken is assumed phonetical, so also OOC.

2a if you're not happy with blurting out datecodes then RP that you believe the person to be insain, again, this is an OOC rule

2b same as 2a

2c OOC rule, if they dont RP thier injuries well, then you have the chance to RP being impressed by how well they function with thier wounds. (If you've ever heard of Black Beards death, it is rumored that he had something like 30+ gunshot and sword wounds and kept fighting as if uninjured until he suddenly collapsed dead.)

3a 1st part is sortof okay, but the part about denouncing not knowing what a bus is is ooc, and the way the no democracy law is written is ooc, but could work if rewritten

3b very vague, but the mention of character is ooc

3c America = ooc

I would report this law list as a serious CRB, and recomend that it be deleted from the game, most of these rules can be inforced in a society without breaking character. That's why some towns invest resources into mental hospitals :) , and if I had a town leader start spiting these laws out, I'd do everything I could to get him/her commited to one.

The rules for a location that's player-perfect for RP and fun:

1) There are no rules
2) Anal types that like rules and regulations are not welcome
Whoever you vote for.

The government wins.

lol Pretty good. And I got the don't be an ass law in my town.

These are very OOC laws, but would make the town/world much better if players obade to them. No one's gonna post these ingame so people, don't go ripping your pants over it!

Using punctuation and capitalization certainly doesn't stop you from rp'ing a speech impediment or an accent. Instead of people having to accept all lowercase as being very silent, how about writing *he whispers in a barely audible voice:*? Would that be so hard? It would come out to me as actually emoting instead of the player being lazy or illiterate.

Case example: There is/was this one guy, a Wanderer (unfortunately I cannot remember his name) who only spoke in whispers. It annoyed my character a lot, but when he found out that the boy cannot talk any louder than that, he understood it's not due to being shy or secretive, and after that it was easier to cope with it.

In addition to "don't have public sex in whispers", I'd like to propose "don't have elongated whispered discussions whatsoever", although the town would have to offer a Town Hall or other public facility for these kind of dialogues. It truly gets on my nerves when people are whispering a quazillion times and that's all you see. I mean my characters do whisper in public, but that's like only a few times a day and there are events from other people in the middle, so they get lost in the flood.

For the lawsetters: K.I.S.S! No one, at least a fresh newcomer, is going to bother reading some dull law jargon that goes on and on for several pages. How many people in real life know their national law by heart? The declaration of main principles needs to be as short as possible, preferably short enough to fit on one page without scrolling. Emphasize the parts that are important, details are just for clarification.
Do not write everything in caps, underlined or bold. That's very hard to read and people will skip it.
If you have additional laws that might come handy in some points of life, but do not touch the majority of the population, have them written on a separate document that's kept in the town library or other public building. People can go read it if they want to, but don't stuff it on their face.

Invalid as they break Maelstrom's law #1b and are therefore good cause for execution of any character proposing them. :)

everyone shall eat pie for dissert, and insert the word pie, or 3.14, or 3, using the phonetical or numerical way of saying it (dosen't matter) into your name, and the name of anything you build.

Wait... that's a rule for pieland.
