Another possible solution to the current boat warfare is *gasp* ranged weapons being able to hit cross deck... in other words, I'm close enough to dock, I can see (but not hear... without whisper... acting more as a yell...) the people on the other boat... and thus I can target them with my crossbow... This not only solves the rediculous unbalance of the boat lock... but also make ranged weapons practical.
After all, just because the merchants aren't carring crowbars, doesn't mean they aren't armed with steel sabers and crossbows... a lone pirate wouldn't/shouldn't stand a chance.
Drastic changes to boarding ships

The problem is, the name Crossbow or Battleaxe for example is just a name, I don't think the value of it as a ranged or close-up weapon was thought of when it was programmed, meaning the Crossbow/Composite recurve bow/longbow etc aren't weapons waiting for something like boat combat..

I like the ranged solution for naval combat not so much as it being the best, but b/c I've been pushing for variety in the nature of weaponry and this would help develop culture specific weaponry(sailors chosing CRBs and crossbows over sabres and battle axes), but I also agree that the way gorrilla tactics works is unfair and this fix would not help alliveate the problems with ground combat which is centered not on your weapon/shield/fighting prowess like it should be, but on who's dragging who where.
I personally hate that a guard with a saber can exicute a man with a battleaxe and iron shield w/o a problem b/c of some cell door. So what if exicution of more dangerious criminals now has to be done more slowly via starvation or taking turns beating him at a heavy expenditure of healing foods? It should.
I'd like to see a "deffensive stance" tag settable so that when your character is attacked he will automaticly counterattack with his most effective weapon, that way your character can reflexively deffend himself when you are not there. He would still have to abide by the one attack a day rule and fatigue etc. This method means you dont have to stay there to be able to be draged into a cell, but you do actually have to fight the deffenders. Since it's a tag it could be turned off should you ever want to spar or if you're just in a peacful enviornment or somewhere that hiting someone with a battleaxe for slaping you isn't acceptable.

I completely agree with you on this. It definetly needs to be done and would help greatly on defending yourself when you are not online.

Yeah, so about docking to ships...
Is there any way we can make docking to ships easier? It's really near impossible. I think that if your ship can get close enough to where you can swing some hooks or ladders, then you can board. If the ship you're docking to moves further away, tough luck for you. But the way it is now where you've got to either be on the same exact pixel as the target ship or the target ship remain stationary for at least 3 RL hours is really hard.
HOWEVER.
This should come along with a reform to defensive combat! Even something as simple as the counterattack tag would work WONDERS for this system!
Please read this thread seriously! I punctuated all my sentences and tried to be coherent!
