I like both suggestions of melbi. Those about delatable notes and burying notes with the body when notes are not taken off from the body.

I don't like the idea of notes staying on a body to be buried with the person b/c often times a dead person will have some kind of personal journal worth reading that you would not neccisarly think is important when buring a body. I'm also against decay. I think notes should have to be intentionally destroyed if at all possible, maybe make it require sissors? I'd say firepits but that would be too easy for newspawns to abuse. This way it has to be very deliberate and hopefully make it recoverable if the project is not finnished.
Edit: reading back to the part about how lighters used to exist for this purpose, I don't see why it couldnt be kept. Not everyone exactly has access to propain and what ever other matterials would be required to make a lighter, they would wind up like crowbars in my opion, common enough for towns to have them when needed, but rare enough to ward off dumb newspawns. Also, most important notes have copies in the possestion of town officals anyway.

I think it's better to have notes permanant.
Avoid sabotage, preserve Cantr's history.
Someday, someone will look over all of the notes, and it will tell them a great deal about Cantr.
To get notes out of the way, just put them in an envelope, title it Trash. That's what everyone does.
Actually, I've found diving into the trash Envelopes can reveal a great deal of interesting things.

Did anyone ever consider that when a note is destroyed, it could simply be stored externally to the game? This would solve the issue of preserving some of the history of Cantr for those who may one day wish to examine it. This not total advocacy for willy nilly note destruction but merely highlighting a point many people seem to miss.
and is writing sentences that don’t begin with capital letters and end with full stops really a whinge worthy offence? – sure punctuation is tried, tested and helpful – but you know, it is sometimes fun to try and read poorly delimited sentences like those of theguy – they all blur together – I recommend trying to read it out loud…. *sigh*
