I totaly agree with that opinion (so I quoted it).Cdls wrote:I think the pics look great, and it does not take anything away from the gameplay. I can understand that some would like an option to turn that off, but to suggest that it takes away from what you imagined it to be is just pathetic. If you have that shallow of an imagination to where you cant get around that, then maybe this isnt the game for you.
As a side note I can just imagine some of the "shallower" players sitting around and when they see an item on TV or in a movie that is used on Cantr there immediate thought is "Damn it, now my game is wrecked, I could have sworn my stone hammer looked better than that"

I think you guys are being rather mean. Rusalka has gone through a lot of work and most of the pictures look cool. Plus it was Jos's idea to include pictures and this is his game originally. The pictures are certainly not looking awkward, they're rather realistic. I personally wouldn't use 3D graphics, maybe because I don't have the skills to make such, but I appriciate Rusalka's skills and efforts. It may not be traditional art but it's still informative.

I think the pics are fine; it eliminates the hassle of having newspawn characters say, "*points at adze axe* What's that does that adze axe look like that I'm seeing?" Heh, that I haven't experienced before, but would be a funny quote to quote if it did. I'm surprised this has never been a suggestion before, has it?
Those who are against this new feature reminds me of the times I read a book and had those character looks etched into my mind. Then I find myself dumbfounded when I watched a movie based on the book and realized the characters I was imagining were different, but I got around that. I don't see why you guys won't do the same with these pictures.

Who said every tool had to be equal?
I don't care how they look there, that's just suposed to give you an ideia on what the item is. How they really look, that's all in my own head!

Same to you!

As I said before, you could put an option in the players settings to disable this. Maybe in a separated menu, lika a "Preferences" one.
Or... this pics could all go into the wikiCantr.
This way it wouldn't ruin Cantr's purism and people like me who like them could take a look at them whenever they wanted!
And now that I know the pics were your work, Rusalka, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Two. I can't imagine that a bone knife (first example to come to mind) created by one character would be identical to one created by another. The same for all tools, I think it takes away from the role playing potential, not that everyone plays in such detail.. Maybe someone awkward at making a tool wants to play having made a poor one that hardly resembles what it should, does having a picture on what this tool is make them wrong for trying that?

I just had another ideia to make everyone happy!
Why not make a button in each item page saying "view pic"?
These button would take you to a different page only with the picture of that tool. It would work more or less like the "view image" bar (don't know what to call it) that you can select when you right-click an image.

Seriously STFU! It is not shallowness, it is purism. Cantr is not graphical. It does it extremely poorly, when it tries. I do not want to see these ugly things. I want to see text, and green. Not some pathetic 2-D gif *You have been stamped ignorant*
There you go again, telling someone to shut the fuck up and using a twisted smiley to make it look better. I'm on to you. you're an asshole again.
They are 3D graphics. I make 3D graphics and if he made them himself, they took a long time.
And it's not a 2D gif, it is 3D just rendered 2D.
You are the ignorant one. I really, really hate you with all my heart, Mykey, you really can be (and are) a complete asshole. Seriously, if you knew how much I hated you, you wouldn't be like that.
Rusalka, ignore the idiot.
Good fricken work.
They're bloody excellent, you put a lot of effort into that and I.. no, we all congradulate you.

Thank you for your comments. RD really cares about potential damage items could make to the role-play. There won't be any picture which could limit your imagination e.g. there certainly won't be a picture of a building.
Pictures show an exemple of item, not the actual item you make.

Will this be happening to weapons aswell? I'd like to think most swords, sabres and the like could be considered unique to a region of maker, part of why I dislike the images.

Honestly, it doesnt bother me to have him tell me to "STFU" it only reconfirms my position that he is acting like a little 12 year old that was told he was wrong. Mykey, it is time to grow up and accept that not everyone here agrees with your opinion on this matter, and in fact, most seem to reject what you have to say.
Anyways, I still havent heard any credible evidence that supports that it takes away from the gameplay. In fact, I think it could add to it. It allows you to see what it should look like while at the same time allowing you to roleplay the way you want it to look like.
I want to bring up another flaw in your "it takes the immersion away from the game" debate. Some people may not know what a particular item is or something, but having the pic there could get the idea across. Your idea of "looking on google" would take more immersion out of the game then having the pics in it. People come on here to play a game, not to have to check out google any time they want to know what something does.

You can now disable them if you want, but they are enabled by default.
And it was indeed my idea to add those graphics, and I love them! I think it totally doesn't change anything about the uniqueness of Cantr and the game is still totally text based, even if there are some graphics around it. So I really don't see the objections - but there is no point in forcing everybody to see them

I find it hard to believe that such intense and pure imaginations can be so easily corrupted and overidden by a little png file in the build menu that one looks at about 1 to 5% of the time one spends playing the game. Such a backlash really seems a bitch knee-jerk and irrational to me.
I am personally neutral to them. I think they do serve a purpose, but in order to keep them from completely spilling into the game and becoming overly pervasive, they are intedned to be restricted to the build menu. And coming from the number of questions I get from non-English players and translators trying to figure out just what in the heck a given piece of obscure equipment is, I personally felt that it would be nice and convenient to have something included directly in the interface that would help these individuals out. I think Rusalka did a good job a making some fairly neutral icons that are good seeding points for imagination.
Morph the presented bone knife into something else in your mind. It doesn't take that much work.
1.) My bone knife is well crafted and looks like a steel knife.
2.) My bone knife is a jagged jawbone off of the mountain goat I just killed.
3.) My bone knife is bigger than your bone knife.
And frankly, I can say the same thing about takeovers in Cantr. They detract from the game and spoil the progress, making Cantr stagnant replacing one half assed government with another....
If a few tiny pictures in the game are completely ruining the fabric of Cantrian space-time for you, I think you personally need to look inside.
It seems that the two people yelling about this with the least amount of constructive criticism are the two currently in the suggestions forum bitching about it being too difficult to sift through the build menu trying to find the piece of text they are looking for. Sorry guys. Sometimes we have to a few things to help out the other 1000 players in the game too.

There was really no need to say that. I myself have some misgivings. It's sort of a thin edge of a philosophical wedge that has considerable implications for the game. We seemed to be agreed earlier that Cantr was meant to be a literary game. That is its strength.

And presumably easier than writing text descriptions for each one that would then have to be translated into a dozen languages, including Latin! Yes, on that basis I'm more or less neutral about it.
However, I do hope this will not distract ProgD from what they should be doing, which is fixing all the broken systems....the broken combat system, the less-than-ideal skills system, the 40 plus desert tortoises in just about every town on the Pok island, and so on. These small interface changes are all very nice, and I've welcomed many of them, but they do suggest that ProgD people have an amazing amount of time on their hands, time which would better be spent fixing what is currently broken.
