I don't like the idea of showing your language before your even spoken to him/her or heard him/her talk. But having different physique between the different language groups would work.
Like in RL we northern people are taller than the southern european. But the big difference is between the rases and not the languages. Eg. one rase(like sweden, norway, denmark, germany, austria, switzerland and netherlands) looks different than any other rases. This is also between all other rases. I don't know the names of the different rases in europe in english.
So, IC this could be 2-3 three languages that are close to eachother that could have the same physique. Or, have the same haircolor or something like that. It dosen't have to be connected OOCly or to be OOC differences. IC it could be that one rase have long and thin fingers alien like...
This might make people from the same rase to get closer and those from different rases get futher away, like IRL. Eg. sweden was pro-german during the WWII even tho we were somewhat neutral because of what i think has to do with that we belong to the same rase. France and England have always been foes due to that they belong to different rases and there still is some hostilities between.
This is my suggestion to language thread... And i haven't said that my information is completely correct.

I'm definately likeing Nosajimiki's "real" getetics concept... Like that, not everyone of a race looks identical even to people of the same race, and then you will eventually also be able to have crossbred races... all in all it would be much fun, while distinguishing "race"... The only downside to this would be, for example, my blind charrie already has pure white eyes... so you'd need a way to be able to keep/establis abnormalities like that. (maybe going through PD to set the value if you have a real RP reason for it to be so?)

I don´t think it a good idea to recognize the language group of a character. You can´t do it in real-life, why should you do it here?
But I agree that learning languages ingame is quite a problem. I think the languages a charakter could speak, should depend on the region he spawned. If an english charakter is born in a town English and Spanish is spoken, why shouldn´t he be able to talk Spanish, if the player is able.
After all the character was living twenty years in this town already.
Of course it is quite incomprehensible why an english newspawn in an purely english area could talk with someone else in Spanish. But I think everyone should decide that for himself.
I think it would be best to make dictionaries and distribute them (ingame of course). This would allow at least basic communication between language groups.
Besides, it would really be nice if characters would have distinct features. Its a bit scary to come into a new town and just seeing a bunch of peoples in "his/her twenties".

I am fine with characters spawning in mutilingual societies to assume knowledge of all their "native" languages. It is just when some guy in an English town miraculously knows Polish all of a sudden when the Polish boat lands and the passengers unload and start chatting. That is where the CRB starts IMWIO.

..omg
" You see a foreign man in his twenties"
How about the word 'foreign' is a changeable link?? like the word 'a man in his twenties' is, you add the name, and the race you THINK he's from.. and that does two things we need to discuss:
1) it adds it for all of his type so when ever you see a foreigner of his type, it says what you've written
2)just adds it for that person
so it becomes
" You see a Chinese N-Aldwitch"
from
" You see a foreign man in his twenties"

Nakranoth's "evil" character says:
"Thief! That's terrible! *shakes his head* That would hurt people's feeling if I did that."

And what about that?: your charrr were born in a multilingual place (let be French and Dutch) and you find a dictionary in the ground with translations from English to that languages... no problem, but, when you (the player) realize that your are living in an island where NEVER a English person has steped on, what should you do?
a) Put the dictionary into a trash envelop and forgot that strange words.
b) Use and improve the dictionary 'cause that words could came from ancient times.
c) Call Cantrlady and ask her to look for the traitor and erase his or her account, merciless.

I ignore those English dictionaries. Might technically be OOC influence, but so be it. I ignore the town charter written in German English and Dutch on the German island as well.
I do not want to add to or participate in the artificial homegenization of game culture any more than I have to.

Of course French-English and Dutch-English dictionaries in a place noone speaks English are quite pointless an surely a CRB. But a dutch-french dictionary would be useful for every Dutch or French player who don´t understand the others language. And every french character venturing through Dutch lands would have good use for it too.

I don't think that anyone is seriously disputing the existence of dictionaries. We just need to make sure that they are all developed in game as fairly and as pure as anything else is created inside the game.

In a way I like this idea in that it would as Nakranoth brought up, not screw with any phyisical RPed concepts relating to what a person looks like, but it lacks the isolationablity that genetics would have. With this system, a person from Treefeather will always be indistingusable from a person on Hobbs, so it would just be an agrivation to see everyone show up as man in his twenties (English) and have all chars have to define that. Most physical characterists are relitive and therefore unimportant to RP. Hair and eye colors are probaly the problematic genes of RPing and there should probably be a way to accomidate such things that are already understood about a character. White eyes most resesive and very rare gene that will be reserved primarly for people who are curently playing blind charies. Perhaps for transistion purposes there could be an ingame prefferences form for every character that already exists. To change certain stats. Only have the form availible for a few weeks, then disable it, if you dont select you own physical stats, you keep whatever is generated for you, and all newspawns get no say in the matter. Maybe as characters get older thier hair can start becomeing graying, gray, white, balding, bald, also.
#004400 is my favorite color.
