If we return to the subject..

I agree with Gyrus. We can implement emotes, via a pull-down menu or buttons, for multi-language coincidences. Also it makes an effect on mono-language areas. Anyone can still use the *..* version, if he/she likes or in the pozitions where emotes are insufficient.

It must not be a hard job for programmers and traslators I believe..

I think the 'inter-lingual' aspects of this are discussed elsewhere, but I'm not sure.

Would it be possible to simply change the input so that something input as
[*he nods* Yes, that's what I thought.]
shows up as
1595-5: a man in his twenties nods. "Yes, that's what I thought."
or [Yes, that's what I thought. *he nods*] as
1595-5: a man in his twenties says: "Yes, that's what I thought." He nods.

I prefer the first one, but your own action would show up as
1595-5: You nods. "Yes, that's what I thought."

Interestingly, if you have speech, then an emote, then speech again, you can make it look like that anyway, with creative use of speech-marks:
1595-5: You say: "Yes." He nods. "That's what I thought."
That's probably frowned on, though...

By the way, at the beginning of the thread new.vogue.nightmare suggested dynamic names in emotes. I was going to suggest the same thing, but I think I'll move it to a new thread.

I think when you do 0% with bare fist. you know how it slaps in the face. I think it should be something you could type in so you could poke in the side or something liek that also

Read through most of this thread and search through most of the forum.... Just wondering, perhaps it can be program in so that all objects can be 'pointed at'?

This is so different language group and simply point and say whatever the item is, and we can all learn some basic stuff about the new language?

It's been suggested many, many times.

For some reason though - the only 'accepted' pointing suggestion is to point at the sea...

I have come to a conlussion on why there should be more emote bottons... and that it should be done...

Reason is simple
Language.
Cantrians have more then one language group that are now coming into contact with each other. Saddly to say...*smiles* might not be understood by say some one in the polish sector. As for many other emotes.

I don't like the idea at all. We really got used to role-play our chars using stars, and even if you would implement these emotes, I don't believe people will start to use them, instead of *smiles*. It really limits our options. Cantr is suppouse to be an unlimited game, so this idea is some kind of devolution, if you know what I mean.

it doesn't remove the ability to use the *..* as you put it. Simply allows for cross langauge interaction. Like I said *smiles* Might not be understood by all language groups.
How do you see it as a removal of the unlimited game?
It just doesn't make sense to me that it does. Just that it allows for a universal point in addition to the already widely used *...*

For simple one or two word emotes, translaters work great. With such short translations, they are often accurate (at least enough to be understood). I think that it is better to have no emote buttons then to have any, since you will never be able to have enough. We will either end up with an interface clogged with buttons and options, or else we will end up with a pride of cheshire cats grinning at each other.

Well, some people might find it no longer expected to use * * if they will be able to click the button.

I forgot to say about the language problem. I've seen people who handle it this way:

1234-56.78: a man in his twenties says: "mi tez milo cie poznac *usmiecha sie / smiles*

Only thing is that they have to know, that other language speaking char is in the location.

That sounded a bit intolerant but i don't mind. My first language - polish :)

So.. Is it a perfect example for comunicating without emotes, or a perfect example of a need of them?

No it's not intolorance... it's I'm a retired sailor with a sailors wicked tongue... I swear a lot and thats just who I am... anyways I'm argueing for emote buttons.. not a huge amount just the basics. enough to start getting a good translation going. (I would mention another example that I am going thru right now but the four day rule is in effect)
