Chinese fishing nets and shore-based nets

Postby formerly known as hf » Tue Dec 27, 2005 11:14 pm

I was going through my old photos, and came across the fishing nets that I saw in Kochin, and thought they'd be a great addition for Cantr - more info I got from good ol' wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_fishing_nets_%28of_Kochi%29

Basically, they're large nets, hung from a wooden crane-like mechanism based on shore, lowered into the water, and they come up again with lotsa fish...

One problem is that fish in Cantr comes in a number of forms, to make sure that the net produces only the fish available at the location, I guess there would have to be as many variations of the net as there are of fish...

I thought it'd be a machine, something like this (values are just a grab-from-the-air example):

Shore based fishing net for cod/trout/salmon (etc?)
Days required: 10
Resources required:
600g iron
3000g medium rope
8000g wood
1000g string
Tools required:
hammer
knife
needle

It should provide a very substantial increase in the rate of collection of fish - I would say at least five times the standard, untooled rate, probably more

I'd also like to see a smaller fishing net - one that can be used by wading in from the shore. It should be an item, not a machine, held in the inventory, much like the fishing spear or pole, but with a greater increase in the amount of fish caught. (a quick google for 'ancient' and 'primitive' fishing nets produced: http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/economy/fishing.htm, http://www.critfc.org/text/fishing.html - there are more)

Small fishing net:
Days required: 4
Resources required:
300g string
300g wood
Tools required:
knife
needle

should provide a larger yield than the fishing pole...

Great idea :) When will be implemented? What about fishing from boats with 'small fishing net'?

Fishing from boats is another kettle of fish entirely...

On boats, no resources appear, and I don't think it's possible to allow that in the current set-up. The suggestion seems to be to create a fishing net as a mchine that can be built on boats, but as things stand, machines can be restricted to just boats, so it's not possible.

Fishing from boats has to be one of the most requested additions. I would really like to see an addition to the current limits of where a machine can be built, (which, as far as I can tell is down to inside/outide a building, the existence of a certain resource, and the capacity of the place where it is built...)
Each and every type of vehicle, boat and building should have a list associated with it of which machines can be built in/on it. Then, when a machine project is started, it would do the usual checks (is there enough capacity, is the reource there etc.) and also check this list - if the list for that particular vehicle/boat/building, does not include the machine you try to start a project for, an error message will get displayed and you won;t be able to do it...

OK

If fishing from boats is so complicated for implementation, maybe easier will be to implement hunting. In sea can live some creatures like tuna, seal, whales, seabirds - they can migrate like animals on islands between locations...

When you find one clicking on 'Animals' button which on boat is implemented you must stop boat and spend some time hunting - more people on deck - faster you kill and get resources. And this is area for some new resources - shark tooth, ambra, whale-oil - and common like bones, meat or feathers...

The addition of fish harvesters (farms or hatcheries, but I like this imagery too) is under discussion in RD, and very similar to the building requirements you laid out Farmer. :D (As it was my idea, I hope it isn't too long before the rest of the crew finally wakes up and says ok. )

As for the great restriction options on where to build machinery, that too has been discussed and I hope that ProgD can help out relatively soon. It is also factoring into the implementation of some cool farming ideas that are under discussion. :) It will still be a while down the road if it happens though. :(

Oh, and I have thought that introducing fish as animals would be nice. It would prevent one of the big things holding fishing back, namely the gathering limits, and make fishing more comparable to hunting. It would however suffer from the fact that people would be fishing with claymores, unless fish could be programmed differently so that they could only be attacked by certain weapons. Individualization of animals might also be factoring into it a bit, but I don't really know. I haven't heard anything about ProgD's plans for it yet. Either way, I think it is going to take a lot of work.

Any development on this?

I know you'd rather wait until fish are coded in the same way as animals - but that's far off and requires more work for the ProgD - this would be a useful in-between?

Considering that fish are generally cuaght en-amsse - it would not make sense to have them hunted in the same way as animals - individually.

This could be done with the current system if i'm not mistaken.

Yes. We have been discussing improvements to the fishing system, but ADD and butterflies have been holding us back on it. Hopefully we can focus on it soon as a few other things get through the queue.

I cannot WAIT for the day you can hunt and fish from boats. Finally, no 100000g piles of carrots waiting around on deck. Although it'd be much easier to fish in the shallows than in the deep sea...

OMG! Did West just endorse "creeping featurism" ?
So you admit it`s not all bad? :D
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.

It's not creeping featurism if it serves a purpose.
