Maybe get one lock try a day without threat of notice, but after that, have there be an increasingly larger chance of being noticed?

Nice idea but I see little evidence of this kind of process in any other game function and thus this would surely be time expensive development for ProgD then...

I think I am correct in thinking that even you chance of picking a lock is random rather than skill based...? Certainly not to my knowledge a sliding chance of luck...

I know but I'm not telling

Ask Chris about that.
I wouldn't want to risk telling something I'm not supposed to.

Also I don't really see the point of this suggestion.
You could always ask the "townspeople" what buildings are locked/open.

Ohh jeez...did you even read what I said about the point of this suggestion? :? Uhh maybe your right..Well lets see here thieves don't really have a use for it since they usually jus try every building anyway and then split..I guess the only true uses for it would be to plan raids or battles.

Ok now I'm having my doubts if this is a good idea..damn and to think I thought I had something. Ohh well atleast it wasn't a repeat. Unless you think we should discuss this further devolopers, go ahead and reject it. I can't defend the idea anymore. Even though it is obvious that it wouldn't cause any damage to the cantr society(despite the belief of some that it would help thieves), I am beginning to realize peanut is right and that it may be useless. So if you want to try to expand on the idea, go ahead, but otherwise just reject it. Maybe I can develope it more and submit a similiar suggestion later.

I think it is a reasonable suggestion. Perhaps more effort then it is worth at the moment, but not something that I would reject.

I had a character who was a boat thief... he went down to the water and attempted to enter every single boat that was down there. Most of them, naturally, were locked. Now, it seems to me that someone should be able to notice a person down by the water attempting to enter every boat on the beach, but no one could. So what he did went completely unnoticed... and when he finally found one that was unlocked, that was the first event that anyone saw, so he was able to make a quick escape.

I think that there should be some way for people to see a character trying to enter locked buildings/vehicles. It just makes sense to me that if someone was going down the whole beach trying to enter all of the boats, wouldn't someone notice? I don't know exactly what should be done, but probably something...

Shh!

I've used that to effect a number of times now.

You're right, it is silly that a character can check dozens of vehicles without being noticed - but I've got free bikes and boats from that before - don't change it - give my spawn and run thieves a chance :)
Whoever you vote for.

I like the idea...(the original one...didn't have time to read all the discussion after it)

This would be useful for my law-abiding chars too. Sometimes you just want to find and abandoned building or one with public machines without looking like a thief, and asking the sleepers and newspawns outside doesn't get any answers.

I think this is a good idea. There should be a chance of getting noticed, but not every time, and would it be possible for the "spot check" to be done by individuals instead of having everybody noticing? Also you could get noticed wether or not the door was locked. I was once trying doors as I had a key I was trying to find a lock for, and ended up running into several buildings on accident.

Good idea. Make entering attempt visible. Stop the thieves from being unnoticed. Or make a new invisible action check door lock... But not a VISIBLE one... All or nothing, but not so unfair as now...

And you should also be able to hear someone trying to open the door from inside.
The following statement is not true.

Or maybe you would Only notice from the inside... adding a remote risk to trying doors randomly...

The problem with pepole entering buildings is that they are then out of sight to steal. That is why it is illegal in many areas. Since with checking the doors you would not then be inside and able to steal, I suspect that checking doors would not be illegal in most places. So the feature, either visible or invisible would be a good idea. It might even be easier to just have an icon indicating that the building is locked, on the building tab for all buildings visible. Not really realistic if you assume all buildings have doors and just some are locked, but if you assumption is that unlocked building have no doors it makes sence...
