clothing, packs and sacks | negative weight

Postby T-shirt » Tue Jul 11, 2006 10:31 pm

I suggest some objects to have negative weight. Carrying them will increase your weight limit.

These objects can be backpacks, belt pouches etcetera.

Even clothes with pockets could have a negative weight when worn.

The effect could unballance things (not that that's wrong per se), but things could also be controlled to limit the objects to peaces of clothing. And have the neagative weight only count when the object is actually worn and not carried. That way, you can only wear one belt (the golden one or the one with many pouches - weighing minus 100 grams), or one backpack (weighing minus 1500 grams for example).

The intention is good, the suggested implementation is quite frankly wrong . Since weight carried is used in vehicles and building capacity calculations it would be wrong to have negative weight items. Carrying an empty backup doesn't make you weigh less - it just means you can carry more.

Such items should increase a person's carrying capacity - not decrease the weight of what they carry.

As an aside ProgD have already implemented something similar - currently just for vehicles but it could be extended further to personal inventories . I'll let RD announce the full details when they have finished validating the first example.
