The feeding and protection would all be in vain.

A very good point

That's right, that arguement has been verified by me as a high quality and valid point.

Well done!

So is the current suggestion for people playing child characters to have the children's skills be poor to begin with in everything, but perhaps once they reach spawning age they will have an appropriate "jump" in each skill dependant on a) other adults that they have helped with on projects and/or b) number of times that they have taken a non-project action on their own (such as hunting or hitting).

surely, Tamogotchi style, the adults should be able to train their child in whatever they skill they want them to have...

Maybe you want little Johhny to be a tailor, give them some instruction in use of a needle, or maybe this could be worked out through them slowly doing projects given to them by parents...

I think perhaps parents would perhaps take longer to train in skills in which they are not profeccient themselves?

I think that would be much better myself...

Or, children could start with no skills, but aquire them much faster until all their skills points are used, and then they work like adult skills.

They could have some starting skills based upon the parents abilities, but they would only be a fraction as good as the parent's skill

eg, daddy is an expert hunter, so when baby is born baby is naturally effecient

or something along those lines

A five year old should not be very good at hunting. But he might get better at hunting really quickly because the father is good at it (i.e. learn at triple or quadruple the normal rate until the fathers skill rate is reached). Of course, how would that work with fathers and mothers...if you use the best skills of both, pretty soon we'll all be super cantrians...we could use averages...am I using to many ellipses?...

AoM - Nooooooooooooooo!! I just said NOT to have a jump. Now where's the sense in that? A smooth change, no sudden jumps.

Solfius - That's right.

Nalaris - have you seen Mad Max 1? There was this little guy with a bumerang and he couldn't even speak but man he was wicked with that thing! The only thing is that some weapons should be more greatly affected by physical strenght, a kid should not be able to wield a battle axe or a broad sword, they could hardly even lift one off the ground. But a slingshot or a knife, now that might work.

Seko, while I've never seen Mad Max 1, it's true that with slingshot, boomerang, or maybe even a knife (melee weapons would be harder to use, but possible) a kid could excel. It would be rare but...quite possible. So how do we put it into game mechanics.

I'd play a kid for a good while. Playing my own kid would definitely be boring, though.
