Why do people keep acting like they need to know the name of every single building and room in a town? Why would you even care? Businesses that are still in business will have signs, and most private houses probably won't, and what's wrong with that? I know in RL I'm really only interested in the place I work at, the places I shop at, and my own house and close friends houses. And that's already more buildings than the average Cantrian deals with anyway.

There's a house on the way to work I sort of think of as the 'house the guy with all the nice sports cars lives in', but I've never exactly had an overwhelming desire to knock on the door and ask what he calls the place and what his cars are named and can I please go inside and map out his bedrooms and closets?

Sorry, but building and vehicle amnesia is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Chris, who did you let talk you into this? Because you're smarter than that.

I have already posted that before you can even implement building signs, you need a physical location for buildings. People need to know where the building is. They need its address. Then you simply need one name for the building. That is its business name or sign, eg Empire State Building.

Same principle with vehicles. You need a chassis number, same as in the real world, permitting a legal system for vehicle ownership and also for recovery of stolen vehicles. The vehicle names in the game are business signs, same as what's painted on the side of a bus or truck in the real world. But that's independent of such legal devices as the chassis number.

And now you want to implement building and vehicle amnesia? When every time a building is renamed it changes its position in the alphabetical order on the page? And you expect my charries to name for themselves every building in towns like Drojf? And look up separate pages of lists of conflicting signs?

Well I am not prepared to waste that much time, and if you guys proceed with this farce, then goodbye.

I have already analyzed how the thing should work (scan for "urban property"):

What if vehicles and buildings came with numbers the way locks and keys do? Would that make everyone happy?

No. Numbers get too long after awhile.

Actually, Marian is possibly correct. Vehicles should be associated with something akin to chassis numbers, dates manufactured and suchlike, just as in real life.

Yes, but say it was part of a dynamic name that could seen by anyone until a sign went up or it was important enough for you to bother changing (Not that anyone would need to know the name of every building in Djorf, but the numbers would at least keep things from getting to confusing if a newspawn started running around.) This could also be seen as a 'license plate' for vehicles to solve the problem Oasis was complaining about in identifying criminals, without making things to impossible and unrealistic for anyone inheriting/stealing/buying 'Pirate Ship' to run a legitimate trading business.

Edit: Yay! I'm possibly correct! :)

So we swap something that works for a long list of boring numbers.... for what purpose?

If you want a month of people spending all their cantr time pointing at things and asking what they are called go-ahead... but there will be a lot of starving characters and heart attacks pretty quickly.

THINK before you ACT!

Just remember people already in town might work it all out pretty quickly but every newspawn that comes along will have to do the same...

Exactly... if it's not broke, don't fix it.

And I was answering Marian's question of whether numbers would make everyone happy... the answer to that would be no.

If someone let's their characters die because they're too lazy/stupid to read a clearly labeled sign, then they're probably also too lazy and stupid to read the laws on the ground and wouldn't last long anyway.

And so far no one as offered me an explanation as to why they think their newspawn or traveller has to know the name of every single building in every single town. I hardly ever even bother glancing at the building list unless there's something specific I'm looking for.

Ok lets try a note on the ground like this:

Blah Blah Bla, .... No theft and no Hunting.....
Blah Blah Blah.... No entering buildings without permsision..
Blah Blah Blah.... Free food can be found in the Hall of Bountious Provision

Go in the wrong building and its curtains.... and don't tell me helpfull townleader 1 is there to explain it to you because it could be three days before they open their eyes to explain...

And why is:
1450-1-A SC
(Eg sportscar and date of manufacture plus letter)

Any better than:
Gerry's Wheels No1
(in accordance with current vehicle naming policy)

You going to barcode all characters soon?

Why do they have to not know the name of every building in every single town?

So far, no one has offered any really good explanations for it to be changed either. It's pointless. Maybe they don't have to know the name of every building, but it sure is interesting looking at the names of some.

The building I work in has "Law" engraved over the entrance. It will always say "Law" at first glance. The only ways to change it would deface the architecture of the whole building. Newcomers still think it's the law building on campus. It's not. I don't think of it as the law building because I work there and I know what it is, and I've read the sign outside that says its new name and its history on it. Who says that buildings in Cantr aren't like that? I pretty much disregard what it says over the entrance now (like you can imagine a Cantrian who changed the name dynamically on a building would).

Realism is good to a point, but when it starts getting tedious and nit-picky...

lol, Mykey..

Oh, and I thought of another building like that, too... One where I used to go to college... used to be the old library building, said "Library" across the front, even though it is now the museum. There are tons of buildings in reality like that from the late 1800's, early 1900's.

So in Cantr, those buildings would be from a certain time-period, think of it as a sort of architectural style that was rampant throughout the lands. Because that's what the current style is, a certain way of building buildings, a certain architecture. It's the architecture of Cantrian buildings, and just because the architecture might change for new buildings, doesn't mean the old ones should be bulldozed and taken away. Takes away history, as has been mentioned, as well as character of the town.

Um... how about an annoying run-a-lot-of-buildings-thief? You'd have to name all the ones that the thief went into.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.
