unnamed location

General out-of-character discussion among players of Cantr II.

Unnamed location?

Bring back location names, but keep dynamic naming too. Landmarks can indicate new names.

We have dynamic names on vehicles now but does anyone every use them? If you have a ship called 'The Jolly Roger' it'll always be called that to everyone...everyone's first impression of it will always be that it's pirate ship, no matter if the pirate died twently years ago and there's been four different owners since then. Same thing with buildings and even location names. Even with 'unnamed location' now it's hard to convince anyone but newspawns to call a town by anything other than what the map says.

And before amnesia it was even worse...how many towns were there that actually bothered to rename themself, when every single traveller and newspawn would just see the old name and refer to it like that?

But for a sort of related suggestion, it'd be nice if instead of 'unnamed location' you saw 'unnamed hills' 'unnamed mountains' etc. At least it would give explorers in places without map a little better idea of the area around them without completely giving it away.

That's why I think dynamic naming without amnesia won't work.

I think Unamed Hills, etc would be a good move.

And whoever said that static names gave them an idea of what the place would be like, how can you have any idea when the names are preset and don't relate to the development of the town?

I don't really have time to make a long post right now, but one question I just had to ask:

Well, once signs can automatically name a place, all will be solved. :)

However, Vehicles should NOT undergo amnesia. Why? They move. Simple as that.

AoM wrote:And seriously... in a game as slow-moving as cantr, this is somehow conflicting with your character's hectic schedule? Sorry, but if you play cantr, you ipso facto have a lot of down time when nothing else is going on. Perfect time for dynamic renaming.

Excuse ME. You basically just said, "If you play cantr, you don't have anything better to do with your time than waste it" --where "waste it" = dynamically renaming buildings your character may have known all his/her life.

I play cantr BECAUSE I don't have a lot of free time, and cantr doesn't require as much. Remember Jos' words: It's for people who have more on their agenda than just gaming.

Boy, that sure would be nice. EVERY change in the last four years has meant that I need to work harder and harder at more mundane tasks just to keep up my characters, thus meaning I need to spend MORE time in cantr for LESS quality cantr time.

I've maintained playing cantr for four years. In that time I've graduated high school (in the top 10%, no less, AND I was captain of the swim team, acted in the musicals and fall plays, played in the orchestra, band, pep band and marching band, and was president of the German Club--I say this merely to indicate that I didn't have a lot of free time) , spent several summers working mostly away from the computer, gone through three years of college, three summer jobs, an internship in another city, and now, a 9-hour-a-day job during the summer. I don't sit on my ass all day eating potato chips and RPing sex with a character that pretends not to be able to talk right.

Essentially, when I see a change like this that is so totally unneccessary, one phrase pops into my mind: "I don't have time for this bullshit." Because I really don't. Cantr is supposed to be fun. Cantr is for people with more on their plates than just gaming. So WHY must you add what is essentially busy-work? All this does is waste some of my precious cantr moments per day doing the equivalent of administrative busywork. I get that enough in real life, thanks.

West, you always know how to get the point across well. :) I just wish more people would listen.

I am with West... FFS it could to take you all of 200 minutes to rename a place, every building and every vehicle in a town like Kwor.... but on top of that it would take you days, possibly weeks to ask about it in game...

If you want a month of people spending all their cantr time pointing at things and asking what they are called go-ahead... but there will be a lot of starving characters and heart attacks pretty quickly.

THINK before you ACT!
