I read it all.

I love LOTR. The books were life-changing (Granted, I was about 12 at the time), the movies were awe-inspiring, and the geekishness reigns!

In my opinion they should have made six movies, one from each book in The Lord of the Rings, left out fewer parts, and made them about two hours each, they also should have checked the pronounsiation key in the back of the book and pronounced the names right...

You all should try reading *The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant* The Illearth wars... starts out a bit different... so keep reading.. you will see what I mean.

I got the Hobbit and LOTRs for my birthday when I was, I read the hobbit right away but never did make it all the way through the other three until I was 12 or 13.

But now I've reread LOTRs lots of times, but I can't get into the Hobbit anymore, now it just seems kind of silly compared to the others.

In my opinion the hobbit is the worst one, though that is probably because tolkien never really took that book seriously. If i am correct, he only wrote it to brainstorm ideas for the Silmarillion, which was his life work (from WWI until death).

Same. Never really liked them though. Not that that stopped me from reading them all; I'd probably like them more if I read them again.

Oh, I thought he wrote it for bedtime stories for his children / other young relatives.

The Hobbit was meant more for younger children if I remember right. Like C. S. Lewis wrote The Cronicles of Narnia for younger children. (Both C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien were members of the Inklings as well as meny other famous Christian writere.)
