I think it would be fun to treat "lol" as the worst of all offensive terms. Now that would add some life to a sleepy town. :D

Cantr-specific swear words, I like it!

'lol' can be the equivalent of 'f--- you', and 'omg' could mean something like 'the leader of your town once raped a goat' :D

Well, this has raised the dust. I must agree with all of it, especially with my speech-based interface, but trust you all aren't actually using these OOC prejudices to influence your chars. And the continual search for new players is likely to produce a lot of unsuitable ones.

Okies... I absolutely hate lazy writers, especially when they write in run-ons like that (oh how I'd love to give them some lessons or at least get them to use some punctuation and capitalization), but to put in a rule or whatever, it's discrimination. Some will get better about it if you give them a chance, especially if they get incentive to start looking around the forums and such. Some won't. Still shouldn't completely discriminate against them that way. The literacy test isn't a bad thing except for discouraging some people. I rather liked the KoL literacy test though. It wasn't much, and really not the type to discourage too much. It would raise awareness too.

As for how I deal, I usually will reduce my interaction with chars that are really bad like that, when it seems like laziness rather than just the player's grammar knowledge. Though if they seem like they have something to say of interest to/around my char, I will respond sometimes.

Hahaha! Megatokyo, long time no see...

Huh, i hear you, Hermit, but it isn't discimination to say "Please make an effort to type with full punctuation and grammar, as this makes it a lot easier to be understood and to be a working member of society. If you wish to give your character an accent, please do." Or words to that effect

I bet all western languages use capitalization and punctuation, so there is no excuse for writing everything in one long bunch and all lowercase*. All that shows is laziness and lack of typing skills.

*) (Except if most of your fingers have been amputated or your native language is Arabic or some far-eastern pictograph system which I assume do not have these features.)

Learning to use all of your fingers for typing does take some effort and time, but after you master it, you can beat everybody in Yahoo Graffiti and that kind of games because you can throw in a bunch of words while some ten year old is still trying to find the first key. And in Cantr, precesion makes my look less obnoxious and makes people take you more seriously  more trades and job offers.

And of course if you speak correctly to your clients, you're more likely to sell more! And be a more convincing character overall....

@ Seko: Your characters are a perfect example. She is one of the best RPers i know, and she types correctly. It takes no time at all, it just becomes easy and fast. As i said before i actually find it hard not to type like this.

In English, the singular first person subjective personal pronoun is always capitalised .

I know, I know... but its not as important as capital letters and full stops ;)

Perhaps I'm just a submissive person? :P

Nice try but if you were that sub, you'd also write the i lowercase in the beginning of the sentence. I once stumbled on a site of a woman who's a sub to the core and was writing otherwise perfectly exept using the lowercase i. At first I considered it odd but then I started feeling she's really brave expressing herself like that, especially when many people might mistake thinking she's stupid or uneducated, (even though after reading a bit of her writing you'd notice the pattern).

Oh, just remembered. A while back, Poppy Alcho in Brunoi explained to some newspawn OOC that it would be preferred that he used correct language. I found that really touching since as a newbie, Poppy's player had been using the terrible "u 2" language and I had told her rather bluntly OOC that she really shouldn't. Many people might consider that a personal attack and quit playing, but she took it well and has been writing properly ever since. Tipping my hat to the player, who ever you are. :)
