Can we add something to the rules?

Postby Crosshair » Sat Jun 10, 2006 9:13 pm

I'm really fed up of people spawning and going:

"hello my name is sam where am i i want to get some food so i dont starve to death can someone help me please"

Can we ask that people make an effort to type properly, cause it just ruins it and annoys me cause things can be ambiguous...

also "lol ur twn is funny lol!"

Should be told to go away, forcefully...

I make a note to kill charries who do this, if i can.

Maybe they have a speech impediment!

Maybe, but more importantly, take me seriously.

The fact of the matter is that they probably dont.

What Crosshair said! I ranted about this in the 'rant' thread not too long ago. I wish you had to take some kind of literacy test before making your account, or at the very least it could say somewhere in the newbie guide that typign liek tihs is frownd apon omg lol.

There's a line here, and it's fuzzy.

See, there are idiots newbs who type leet and need to die. We all agree on that.

But then there's also the line of RPer's who type "accents". Those may not be the most well written, but it's with good intent.

Then there's the language to think of. They may not be native english speakers. More important than that, though, is that polish is or is close to the majority population of the game.

How well would you do on a Polish Literacy test?

That's what I thought. Rant away, but keep that in mind...
Reality was never my strong point.

There's a big, big difference between "hello my name is sam where am i i want to get some food so i dont starve to death can someone help me please" and an RPed accent.

Then there's the language to think of. They may not be native english speakers. More important than that, though, is that polish is or is close to the majority population of the game.

I can usually pick out a little grammatical weirdness, but on the internet most people who speak English as a second language speak it better than most native speakers. And once again something like "hello my name is sam where am i i want to get some food so i dont starve to death can someone help me please" is never going to get mistaken for someone who doesn't understand the language very well...there's nothing wrong with the actual words, you see, just the lazy way they're typed, and I'm pretty sure things like capital letters and punctuation are pretty standard no matter what language you speak.

Hello my name is Sam. Where am I? I want to get some food so I don't starve to death, can someone please help me?

Not exactly the best newbie intro ever, but at least it's passable now, and fixing it took me what, five seconds?

Fair enough.

I love it when "hello my name is sam can i have some food how do you play this game" is met with:

"Whe', laddie, Ah dinnae ken yer accent an' Ah dinnae liek yer tone, bet yon's th' granary an' ye kin grab ye'self a peck aer so o' carrots if ye need; cast yer eyes o'er th' rules writ on yon note groun'wards an' we'll see what we can do wi' ye"

What's stopping town governments from making speak clearly laws?

I don't understand what you just typed. This is exactly the reason..what you understand, someone else doesn't.

The fact that all we can do as punishment is kill people. :P And killing someone for bad grammar seems... overzealous.

I agree with Crosshair!

I remember a fresh, young prison guard who took it out on a newbie player by telling him to "speak the Mother Tongue"... I think I still killed that newspawn thief...

And not letting them play to begin with isn't?

If he did die, it was for other reasons. Not his speech impediment which was how my prison guard viewed it. Plus, if I remember correctly, Cassius and he were playing Bad Cop/Worse Cop...

I didn't say that. 8) I'm split on this. N00b that can't speak clearly annoy me, but I think it's a bad reason to scare them away from the game. Maybe they'll learn... or not.
