Cancelling Road Projects (and later, working them both ends)

Postby Surly » Tue Jun 06, 2006 9:12 pm

Okay, while I am sure this has been suggested before, my failure to find the thread with the search word "road" indicates I may be wrong...

Anyways, this thread has two levels, to address one problem: the fact that someone can start road improvements from the end of the road where nothing better than a path leads, and the road improvement crew in a car at the other end are helpless...
1) The long-term solution - make roads workable from either end. This would enable the road crew to work on a road (reasonable, since they would have been able to if they had started their project first anyway) even if they did not start it.
2) The short-term partial solution - I would like to emphasise, first, that this is only a temporary fix in my opinion and I would like the first to be implemented at some point. However, whilst that is the case, why not just make road improvement projects cancellable? Cannot be too hard to program and would enable one person to walk the road with few resources, cancel the project and allow them to start it at the end they can reach. I can think of absolutely no reason why road improvement projects are the ONLY projects that cannot be cancelled, even if they were started 200 days ago and have no resources added...

Hopefully ProgD will see what I say and agree... For now, what does everyone else think?

I didn't know they could not be canceled.. even without resources aded...Thats odd and I agree they should be able to be canceled... on the second note...I think it is a great idea that roads can be worked on from both ends.... but does half a project have to be started on each end? and when 1/2 is done... can you only travel down that half with the car? >.< sorry... just thinking out loud. But I do think working from each end is a great idea..

As I said in #Cantr, I agree with both ideas.

No, in my opinion. If you work half from each end you will end up with the same issue with being unable to improve the rest of the road from your half.

I would think that resources could be added to the road project from either end of the road, and the project could be worked on by participants from either end.

NOTE: Maybe as a mid point between the two, we could cancel the project from both ends? See it from both ends, until resources are added at one end...

.

This sounds better.. :P To me it is logical to be able to work on a road from either side... resources added from either side... This would help if old projects could be now seen from the other end... so resources could be added... It never made sense to me why cantrians started road repairs at the wrong end... when the sand was at the other...>.< then again.. alot of things in Cantr.. are not logical :P alot of Cantrains are not..... but I suppose... I am getting off track..

Simply stated...I agree with the Surly one..

Agree with it all. It's always seemed odd to me that you can be working on a road, 99% complete, ie you've almost reached your destination, but can still talk to people at the end you started... but no doubt this is something difficult to deal with.

Working on a road at both ends is a good idea.

But it'd have to be implemented in such a way that it would not allow instant communication between locations - Even if it's developed so that you can't see characters working on the project who aren't at your location, Cantrians are sly enough to start using things like the number of grams of sand used on the project, or the % complete as a means of communication, if a change at one end is reflected in the project details at the other.

To stop signalling issues like that then each project would only show the project progress along the total route for the work done at that end .
So it may look like you are only 40% along - then it finishes because the other location has finished the other 60%. You will therefore have no idea hown much resources have ben added at the other location nor who is working there if anyone nor what progress has been made.

Unused resources would be returned under those circumstances in inverse ratio to the amount of work done

Chris.. are you saying, each end would have to add the full amount of resource?

Does that reply mean this has been worked on, Chris? :?

Sunni Daez wrote:Chris.. are you saying, each end would have to add the full amount of resource?
It means both ends would have the add the full set of resources in order to work on the road... but if their end only finishes 33% of the porject (67% completed at the other end) they would get 67% of their resources back (the other end would get 33%) - kinda like meeting in the middle.

Only that it's been discussed in the past in ProgD

The same project to improve a road should be visible at both ends of that road. Then on both sides resources can be added and time can be spend to work on that road.

Chris, could you at least make road projects cancellable in the short term? It really is very frustrating... and not in keeping with any of the rest of Cantr... :x
