People that expect you to exactly know the entire contents of the library by memory via subject, call number, or whatever other method they think you ought to know it by. And they expect you to know exactly what they're talking about. It doesn't matter if you've worked there 20 years or 6 months, you're supposed to be better than the computer at filing that information away in your mind.

So what if by 1952, there were 8,500 books, more than 30,000 manuscripts, maps, typescripts, and 4,500 photographs? Surely you know all that and what's been added since then. And the extra 1750 collections added and merged into it by 1967. Wait! We're not even up to 2006 yet! Now there's over 250,000 photographs to choose from!

"The Manuscripts Division holds more than 2,000 collections varying in size from a single item to more than 400 linear feet," (mind you, one collection of little papers) "and covering American history from the period of discovery to the present." The division "also preserves more than 5,000 maps of Indian Territory, Oklahoma Territory, and the entire Trans-Mississippi region."

"The library also has an extensive collection of nearly 20,000 microforms, that supports both published and unpublished holdings in the areas of western history and Native American cultures."

Five basement levels of just manuscripts! Rooms and rooms full of old books! More rooms of photographs! Not to mention the different specialty things that are in special rooms! Maps and sound recordings! One photo collection has almost 3,000 photos in it! It's 60+ boxes full of photos under one man's name!

And they get mad at me because I don't know exactly where what they want is even if I'm trying to do my job which is to help them locate it using the tools at my disposal. Not to say, "Oohh, you want to know about the law from 1820 about tobacco prohibition in Timbuktu that John Joe Bucksley wanted to pass. Well hold on a minute, it's just on the 5th basement floor to the left of Marta Mordedari's folder that has her euology in it."

Right, it's our job to know how to use the tools and try to help locate things. Not our job to have everything memorized when it would take a lifetime to memorize it. Especially if you're just a student worker and have no part in developing the collection.

I think I'm done. :?

wow after all that it looks like you do know the whole library pretty well

Once I had 15 characters then I deleted them all because I was far too busy... Then I opened another account and decided I was going to be much more careful I think I got to 15 again, or maybe 14 this time before I emailed the PD to dish out a few heart attacks, down to ten, another email and down to 5... 5 characters I really loved, they were all going places, equipped, skilled, responsible. Then life crushes in, massive lag, a domestic with the wife about how much time I spend on the PC so I did the evil deed and wiped out the last 5 MURDER! Been thinking about it and upset all week.

Guess how many days I lasted before I opened a new account? 5 measly pathetic days of moping around the forums and getting withdrawal symptoms. I can't beleive I only last 5 days... thank God I'm not a freakin' crack addict! :?

Third account, I swear it my last.... *shivers* one more character can't hurt me....I can give up tomorrow , I swear!

*quickly downloads 10 minutes of cantr into a needle and injects it into Phalynx's arm* this should hold you till morning, if you have any side effects log in immediatly!!!!!

Poor Phalynx!

I've starved a few, asked for one to get a heart atack, but I can't imagine losing any of the chars I have now. (Except for maybe two of them, but I'm betting they'll probably die young from unnatural causes anyway.)

The thought of killing any off myself seems wrong, and the thought of someone else killing them is absolutely horrible, but I'm just starting to realize how long-term a commitment this is going to halve to be.

I can expect them to die of old age at what, 100? More? Still, that's almost 4 more years of playing for my oldest chars, and over four my new ones.

But about your problem of spending too much time on the computer, I suggest making 12 chars, then starving them. Repeat every two months. :D

(But seriously, now that slots are programed to be locked, can we request them to be? I wish I'd been able to do that a couple of months ago when I had it down to nine chars...I mean I like the new ones but I was crazy to make them.

As if to rub salt in the wounds, one of my two characters has spawned in the same place has one who died.... This happened last time...

Its quite depressing because characters you previously liked and had a good relationship with your other character can be pretty obnoxious to a newspawn character...

It's such a shame that millions of people will only know Big Brother in the sense of a freak/reality show, and not in the sense of Orwell's 1984.

a few of mine have starved and even more would have if others around them hadn't taken such good care of them.
not intnetional, this happend a couple times those times we were without cantr for 3 days at a time, and i didn't relly get myself into the game except to login to stop from timing out. well the 3 day loss of playing combined with other problems kept me from getting my mind back in. i miss some, though i guess a couple deaths were for the better one of them particularly for cantr :P

I was thinking an encounter with the Secret Service on Pennsylvania Ave. after reading the first sentence.

The show is awful though so I will give you some moral support. If you need an alibi, HF is know to be really good at making them up.
