fax

Postby fishfin » Thu May 25, 2006 10:00 am

this idea is that in cantr you can build fax machines to send notes over long distances and it would work very similarly to the radio

The same as my teletype idea really, and radio teletype don't need wires. *grin*

I assume teletype is like telegraph... only using radio... people would need to design a cantr version of morse code.. wicked!

I am still not convinced radios were a good idea, let alone... hang on, this idea is radios all over again! Just with a small variation...

Only I assume a note pops out the other end, not just a voice message, so you could receive the message even if you weren't in the room at the time. I think it would be a huge advantage over the radio. I like it!

How about instead of a seperate machine, it's something you can add on to an already made radio to make it record messages and print them out?

That would work even better. Otherwise, radio's would become obsolete.

A teletype machine would be an addition to the radio, which takes any incoming messages and produces a note with that message on it.

Thereby negating the one restriction placed on radios to try and prevent them being too overused... Count me for a nay on this one.

Why the hatred of radios?

I think they're one of the better recent additions - they allow inter-location co-operation and communication, something solely needed - the length of time it takes to travel and exchange information has been one of the main reasons there have rarely been true multi-location powers.

As the mystery of Radio teletype is baffling younger readers, here is a brief explanation of how it worked. As its concept was adopted by the computer industry leading to data tapes and disks, it should be more widely known.
You need a radio, what is now called a modem, and a typewriter-like gadget, the teleprinter.
When a key is ppressed it is converted into a five-bit binary code, (Murray code), which the modem converts to two tones, just as the old computer tapes used to work, which is transmitted over the airwaves.
At the receiving end, the process is reversed, produccing a copy of what was typed in.
As this was all mechanical, the speed was very slow, 45 bits/sec whereas even the earliest tapes were 300, and current broadband speeds are in the millions, but it worked.
And it ought to work in Cantr.

I was thinking of it more as you put a note in one end and a copy of it comes out some where else but you keep your note

Radios for me embody the whole hybrid database of Cantr, where we have cars without fuel and Boiled eggs without water.

This in itself is fine. However, it becomes an issue when brought into contact with the RL ideas - radios, deterioration, tiredness, skills... and the resulted mass is horribly unbalanced. It took your char too long to get somewhere? Improve roads! Build vehicles! Don't just acceuntuate your chars laziness by having ProgD solve it for you...

That is why I dislike radios. While the principle is good, the reasons behind its implementation were suspect at best, and its reulsts are also questionable.

And a fax machine? That is just a way to bypass the one disadvantage of a radio, having to be inside to hear it. Well, to you people I say deal with it. Plenty to do inside anyway. Especially if you ever make the stupid error of cooking with anything except wood...
