Building Modifications

Postby Jason Bourne » Thu May 18, 2006 3:40 am

I looked and didn't find anything like this in the list of used ideas.

************************
Make buildings, then add things such as window, arrow slits, balconies.
Also, be able to make walls to surround a courtyard.
Lastly, make different kinds of locks. e.g. an iron bar that is slid into place to bar the door.
************************

The purpose: to make it so that you can see outside and shoot people who are outside, or be seen and shot by those outside. If you go onto a wall, you can be shot and shoot at others, and it could lead to the Feudal system. Lords protect peasants and let them come to their protection in return for the goods that they make. Another improvement would have to be the doors. If the locks move inside to where you can't get at them, you have to break the door down, so need to be able to improve doors.

The biggest problem I see here is in not being able to see outside, or into a building.

There must be something new in there right? Tell me I'm at least a little creative. (Being new to this and all.)

Windows:

Combination Locks:

Wooden Locks:

http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3873

Mention of courtyards:
http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8907

Lots of different things, much like the ones you proposed have been discussed in each of these. The courtyard thing doesn't seem to be as discussed from my memory, but I don't know really. I do remember talk about shooting out windows and yada yada yada.

Anyhoo, there are those links I found; too lazy and not bored enough to go more in depth than searching topics with the key words "locks", "windows", or "courtyards". Modifications of buildings after they're built have been discussed in various threads too.

And welcome to posting in the forums. :)

I've always thought it would be great to be able to build doors between buildings (so you could go in one building and come out of another).
The following statement is not true.

Well, it would be useful in that it would be interesting for crimnals to build big chains of buildings, but they can already do that, except the building chain can't lead onto the square. I don't really see a need, but whatever, the programmers have nothing else to do, oh wait.....

It was much nicer than the list I was writing up to post. Besides, how can you call a face that pretty mean? :D

I pointed out to someone else yesterday that windows were implemented back when boats could still be built in towns without access to water. They didn't appreciate my observation very much.

 All I wanted was to be helpful!

What about toilets, and a constipation level, then sewage could be an issue, and they'd have to make laws against leaving sewage around.

Toilets have been suggested before, many times, and also suggested as weapons!

Welcome to the forums, Jason.

When we discuss, don't feel offended or anything!! :P :D It's just we argue, but we don't belittle. (unless it's Cookie or that guy with a duck as his avatar... not Surly, he's nice, another guy...)

Otherwise, windows have been suggested, yes, and...

I AM IN LOVE WITH BUILDING CONNECTION!

That's a work of brilliance, though it's been suggested in another context! :P

It'd be great for creating a criminal underworld... Like, you enter a Storage House, then you enter the cupboard, then the Secret Library room in the Cupboard room, then from there... you have instant access (underground access, even??) to several ancient, dead homes that have been locked for eternity... I mean, people could just like disappear, live inside their homes! I mean... come on! Think of the possibilities, when animals are draggable! We could drag hordes of animals in, then hide inside deep-rooted and deeply-hidden vaults and such!

And there could be corruption! Like, a backdoor into Olipifirovash's Bank!!! OMG OMG !!!11!!! I'm sounding like Pie with all this excitement!

No hard feelings then! --- :D

Has anyone suggested "project tunneling from Xanth's house to Armory has been completed"
Then you'd need to disguise the entrance so that no one could find it.
Or you could dig a tunnel from outside into a house to end a siege.

They are building advancements, are they not? How about digging a basement, and lining the walls with something hard, and concrete floors. This would make it hard to tunnel in, and you could hear someone banging on the concrete or whatever is keeping him out.

Buildings should start with dirt floors until you put a better floor in, perhapse, room sized carpets after that?

Because basements are in this post, why not lofts or upstairs areas, which once again lead to balconies. Then you'd need a ladder to get up into the loft, and you could make a stairway down from a balcony and have to entrances to the building.

Okay, now it's sounding like the Sims... :?

What's the use, friend? Of having Carpets? Where do you put the text saying 'this building has carpet'? In Objects?

(just discussing, still not assaulting you YET!)
