Not naming a building until it's finished
I've already had to deal with three people starting buildings and rooms they never intend to finish just to be annoying or to get their characters killed, and even if we're supposed to be able to remove projects one of these days, it would also be nice and a lot more realistic if when you started making something it was just 'a stone building' or 'a wood extension', or even 'a longboat', and you're only asked to name it when it's actually finished. Because how do you paint a name or hang a sign on something that's not even there?
If people knew their character couldn't turn buildings into annoying, permanent messages from beyond the grave, they probably wouldn't be tempted to abuse the game mechanics that way and would use notes or something instead. (Note bombers would still be a problem I guess, but at least those can be stuffed into an envelope, and seem to usually be deleted anyway.)
And even if they did start buildings, like the suicidal idiot who stole 10k and put it on a cottage, at least they wouldn't be able to name it after themselves or write some other message on it, and the town could eventually put it to good use if they went through the trouble of finishing it ...if the person who started the project is dead or not there anymore the name would have to default ot someone else, I guess.
Or maybe there shouldn't be a name at all unless you start a short project to make one? I think I already saw a suggestion thread about building signs somewhere, so I won't go ino that here. I'm just curious what people think of the general idea?

I like this idea a -lot- but there is two little niggles that need to be sorted out. One. At what point are you asked to name the building and how do you do it? Because players arn't going to be online the moment it finishes
Two. What happens with the name if the building starter dies or leaves, and someone else finishes the project? Who gets to name the building then?
Give me answers to these two questions and I will like it even more

Yeah, I wasn't completely sure about those but I wanted to see what people thought of the general idea. But come to think of it I'm starting to like the idea of having to make a sign better and better, there's not supposed to be ownership programmed into the game anyway. Maybe I shoudl dig up one of those old threads...

Building (and vehicle) amnesia is already planned - and will be implemented a few weeks after signs are implemented. Then all buildings will be renamable
Names of building/vehicle projects at project setup will probably still be required - just so that people can identify which "building a mud hut" project is theirs

If so, it would be a hassle to have people help out. You'd run into the same problems that existed with road improvement before they got individual names. Basically, you'd have to remember who started the project (less of a hassle when building buildings, I admit) or when, to tell them apart.
Regarding building amnesia: I like it, but I hope there is a long period between sign implementation and amnesia, so people don't come back from moderately long trips and no longer know where they live.
By the way, how does this mesh with dynamic naming? Will it be disabled? If it's kept, we need an equivalent of <CANTR CHARNAME>.
Regarding vehicle amnesia: I can deal, I suppose. The period between sign implementation and amnesia is even more important here, since the little buggers move, though.
/Hellzon - predicts a wave of car thefts once signs are implemented.

I think this is quite sad... a number of buildings in different places have historical meanings, that go back years... I don't mind signs as an extra identifier for buildings..
And I am not referring to the Elgas fiasco..
I have a character in Naron Forest where there is the 'Lad Imperial Outpost' none of the characters had any living memory of the Lad empre but it has been the cause of discussion, argument and curiosity, similarly buildings on the K Island act as memorials... Those long dead cant come along and build signs for those buildings...
What of Cantrian Archeology?

I tend to agree that if buildings get "amnesia" there should be some sort of reference to the old name available. (not sure how that would work as far as interface goes).
I've got a character who is currently collecting the resources to build a memorial structure as well, and I do find it interesting to see the old names of many buildings, with notes in those locations with instructions similar to "The Building XYZ is now called ABC", which prompts a few quick conversations about the history of that area.
If notes can not be destroyed, in order to preserve a Cantr-history, then buildings should likewise stand the test of time...

I agree, we're going to lose a lot of history in Cantr from this. Not all my chars are in their home towns, won't be able to laboriously relabel all buildings. There are certainly a hell of a lot more buildings than there are roads, and you're not going to have the town officials constantly tell people the names of them all, let alone the names of the rooms inside.
I do feel chaos did ensue with the renaming of the roads. I've had so many chars get lost in their own neighborhood it's ridiculous.
So when I say that chaos will rule supreme once we don't recognize a single building or room in Cantr, I am not just nay saying, but i do believe it will be a very poor move.
Allow for building plaques to be made, to allow for buildings to be renamed. Don't make us forget the names of them all.

I think you should still be able to put a sign directly onto a building when you build it, that is permanent, much like putting a stamp onto buildings built in the modern world today. regardless of what sign is hung out front, that stamp will always be there.
