really interesting religion?

Postby Marian » Wed May 03, 2006 2:43 am

It seems like most of the religions I've come across in Cantr are either some really vague "be nice to everyone and share your food" type thing, or else it's some really weird complicated thing a newspawn dreamed up. Either way they never seem to actually go anywhere, and I'm just wondering if anyone can talk about an actual successful religion there character has started or is in.

Also, I'm curious about the following things:

1.) Do any Cantr towns have enforced religions? Like instead of you sulking or leaving town when somebody tells tyou your crazy the guards can actually lock them up or kill them for blasphemy or whatever.

2.) Has anyone ever tried the Pharoah thing, like claiming to be a god/goddess?

3.) Has it ever actually worked?

4.) Has anybody ever come across a secret cult with secret rituals, like maybe some of the guards get together and sacrifice note thieves on a stone table and no in town ever finds out? Or actually that might be easier with sailors.

Anyway, I was just trying to think of things that could make a Cantrian religion a little more interesting, and those were the first things that popped in my head. Anyone have any other suggestions?

A religion where everyone must introduce themselves in Haiku, and the leader is the last one attacked by an animal, based in one of the old lands without the bears or elephants.

The Cult of Silly Traditions.

Never really took off. Was run out of town by Stone Knights because I was taking cues from the animals in town, that they mistook for me referring OOCly to leaders in another location.
Reality was never my strong point.

If I can ever get a base of power and a few religious zealots than the Alrian religion should take off, or else!

The problem is, how do I get those things?

Small towns are a better bet for strange superstitions, but they usually aren't elaborate enough to be called a religion. In Kiii Desert we believe snakes have supernatural powers, but they are evil.

The best way to have a religion (as in organised) is to ensure all leaders know the true purpose of instituting it: Controling other people in one way or another, disorganised religion (as we have with few people beliveing one thing.) can have all the other factors, but the orginisation is just there to control people (even for 'good' reasons).

Who needs religion?

I have a character that very sucessfully runs a church, and is branching out, in the name of the church. However, this person has not held one sermon, or preached for one day. Why? Because it's a lot easier to convince people to allow you access to their resources if your'e doing it in the name of the church, and who suspects a religious leader to be crooked? Very good for trading too.

How about religious buildings and temples? One of my characters spotted one before, but I don't remember its name.
