I still think this is a really good idea, what's wrong with knowing how god at things that you've already tried? Experianced players kept a list like this anyway, it's just automated it..... which means less work for us..... which is a good thing :D

I figured out you only see what you've tested when my guard that doesn't do much (variety wise) only had about 8 skills listed and the one right before had about double that.

 I honestly just wrote something that I imagined someone would say.
Didn't want to use the exact phrases from the game.

That does suck I admit!

Umm, the style of emoting gives away the player, who ever that is, and I think I've heard the word Crew before... Hmm, anyway, it does sound rather clumsy asking something like that so blatantly. I've had to spend a long time writing down people's skills and I'm not gonna start asking them for full lists all of a sudden, even though I know it's possible for the player to see it. I doubt a character remembers something tried they tried only once ten years ago.

It is depressing because when you see them all listed like that, it becomes so glaringly obvious that there's no rhyme or reason or logic or even common-sense thought involved in the Cantr skills system. :x

The problem is that for me it's an intellectual disgrace. One cannot work with it to mould a character in any shape or form.

Do what I do most of the time with the General Discussion forum, just don't pay any attention to it. It will make your gaming more enjoyable. And even my awkwardly skilled characters are making fine livings for themselves.

This is not, nor ever has been the end of the world. If this is really shaking existence so badly, it really is time to open the blinds and go outside for some fresh air. Life will go on and we will have happy quality roleplaying again somewhere near one of my characters...it...it can't be dead...forever. Can it?

I pretty much agree with Wichita....I try to ignore the skill things as well.... it's a nice things to know, but it can interfer with RP if people focus too much in it. Like right now, one of my character is a loyal worker of a town, and he's currently helping to build a building... I can't very well respond to the town leadership and said "no, I shouldn't be building this because I'm not a good builder", if my building skill is not good at all. :P

But, it's still a nice thing to know, because I know how many different type of tasks I have tried.... and that there must have been more things I have not experienced yet.... :o

That doesn't seem so unreasonable to me. Think about real life. That's like asking your co-workers what they're good at so that each one can use their own abilities more efficiently. For instance, if you can't pitch a tent for crap but you're a good cook, you're not going to be the one pitching the tent. You're going to be the one cooking dinner. Why is that so horrible?

And there's been these skill lists before this new change.

Random question - is "manufacturing a gold ring" using the "tailoring" skill?

My charrie is "novicely manufacturing a gold ring"
Skills:
Manufacturing tools — expertly
Refining — expertly
Hunting — expertly
Carpentry — skillfully
Burying — skillfully
Manufacturing machines — skillfully
Building — skillfully
Mining — novicely
Manufacturing weapons — novicely
Fighting — novicely
Tailoring — novicely
Digging — novicely

PS Despite all the "idiots" and others who can't conprehend the details of this post, I'm finding it quite a revelation that my charrie has tried quite so many things in his days - I would have never have remembered most of those skills, even if I had written them down (he must have built a building 15 years ago, for example).

Yes, that would be count as tailoring. They don't need a "making rings" skill.

You see, this is the nonsense I've been referring to. Throughout most of history, since the beginning of the iron age and lasting until quite recent times during the Industrial Revolution, most ironworking was done by blacksmiths who made both weapons and tools, and also repaired same, as well as shoeing horses and whatnot. Now, look at the above:

"Manufacturing tools — expertly" versus "Manufacturing weapons — novicely" Repairs are not mentioned.

Now how can one create a "blacksmith character" in such a case? Where is the logic to it?

Same with "Hunting — expertly" versus "Fighting — novicely"

Cantr is advanced in so many respects and yet its skills system is far behind MUDs designed 10 and even 15 years ago.

Manufactoring weapons and manufactoring tools as a blacksmith I agree is stupid, they should be the same or at least nearly the same. However hunting and fighting I do not even faintly agree with that they should be the same. They are completely different skills, hunting involves tracking and speed, as well as skill with accuracy if you are using a spear, whereas fighting is all to do with reflexes and strength

Well, but hunting an elephant wouldn't be nearly as hard as hunting a hawk.

So, if you want to make accuracy, agility, strength skills and such, I suppose that would be more realistic.
