Religion specifics. Questions about a religion?

Postby Joshuamonkey » Thu Apr 13, 2006 5:21 am

What is your religion. Questions about someone's religion?

I'm a Mormon. (I hope you've realized this by now, take a look at my sig.)
I believe everyone is judged by what they know, so people who never hear of the "true" gospel can still go heaven and the celestial kingdom.Oh wait, am I the only one who knows what the celestial kingdom is? :?

So even if not everyone knows about the religion, its still good to tell people the truth, right? And get more people to follow the good standards. Even if they don't believe, its still good to do what right. And along with that, for the second coming, every nation has to hear of the true gospel or something like that. And our church does baptisms for the dead and things like that.
Almost everyone in a religion thinks their religion is right, or they wouldn't be in it.(atleast the ones that actually go to church) I'm one of them...

What happens if a person wants to answer no? The question does ask, "Do you have a religion?" not, "If you have a religion, how involved in it are you?" So theoretically, you should be able to say, "Yes, I have religion!" or "No, I don't have religion."

Just pointing out a little discrepancy... :P

I'd agree with Hermi. There needs to be a 'no' option, with the way the question is phrased.

What do you think of these specifics for Mormons:
No dating until 16 years old.
No dances until 14.
No smoking, alchohol, or any other bad or addictive drugs.
Babtized at age 8 or when they join the church.
For boys, you can't get married until you're atleast 21, for girls atleast 18.
Boys are required to go on a mission for 2 years at age 19, for girls you can if you want, and is recommended.
Tithing to the church of 10% of your income.(How do you think they make all those temples?)
They aren't restricted against caffeine, but it is very recommended to not do so. Most listen.
And also, when boys are 12 years old, they can be a deacon, 14 teacher, 16 priest, 18 elder.
LDS(Latter Day Saints) church is also the largest sponser of Boy Scout Troops in the United States.
Wikipedia wrote:The church reports a worldwide membership of 12,560,869 as of December 31, 2005, with 6.7 million members residing outside the United States. It is the fourth largest religious body in the United States.
As of 31 December 2004 there were in excess of 51,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world at any given time without pay.

Way to much to say, there's the basic stuff. (maybe a little more than basic.)
We believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost. (Godhead)
Based off the Book of Mormon translated by Joseph Smith. (religion started in 1830)

Anyone else have a religion they want to give specifics for? I know Dee has one...

LOL, I do :)

Well. Let's start with the very basics...

You can't do drugs, no alcohol. Sex is only permitted when you're married.

We have to pray five times a day, but more than five times a day is preferrable. We should read the Qur'an as often as possible.

Women are required to wear the Hijab, but I don't wear it. I know I'm wrong.

Some people go as far as saying that music and movies shouldn't be heard or watched. However, I do both.

See, I'm not a perfect muslim... But of course I do believe in God.

I think all relegions' basic principles are the same.

Oh, we fast for a month. We have to donate a percentage of our money (called Zakah).

That's all I can think of right now.

*grumbles about sexism*

I think I recall that Muslims are supposed to make a pilgrimage to Mecca during their lifetime if it's possible? Right?

And they have to face the direction of Mecca when they pray don't they?

oh yeah! I know a muslim. They are noticed in school as the people who can actually wear a hat. :P
We're supposed to fast for a day on the first sunday of the month.(A lot of people do it more like 3/4 of a day)
Also every Sunday there is sacrament at church. Usually the Deacons are passing it around, teachers prepare, priests bless.
Sex is only permitted when you're married.

That's a definitely for LDS too.
And we bless our food and things like that and we pray and stuff. We do family prayer every day and sometimes read the scriptures as a family.
Family Home Evening every Monday. This is either an activity day for the family or most of the time where we do church like things.
Every week the people from ages 8 go to scouts or girls go to some activity thing every two weeks. At 12 boys go to Young Mens/boy scouts and girls go to Young Womens.

I am a devoted Christian.

To be a Christian requires 2 things:

From 1 John 3:23
"and this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us."

That's all. No other rules.

Everything else you hear or are forced to do or are preached at to do, etc all stem from these 2 things. If you do these you will have your eternal inheritance.

The above verse goes on to say:

"Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us."
1 John 3:24
