Nothing could ever be more important.

I would also include Midol and ibuprofin though, if bathrooms made the list...

In Cantr though, that's a different matter. I use about 3 tools regularly:
1) Hammer
2) Needle
3) Knife

And I've never really needed much else.

I guess it depends on social status, who you are, who you work for, if you work for yourself then... if you're a builder, if you're a captain, etcetera it's all different.

#1 - Crowbar, every paranoid character needs one
#2 - Iron Shield,
#3 - Hammer
#4 - Trowel
#5 - Screwdriver
#6 - Knife

#1 & 2 keep you alive.
#3-6 are staples of every manufacturing character. Most of the basic needs can be met by owning these tools.

A weapon is always helpful.

1. Crowbar
2. Crowbar
3. Crowbar

(Actually by way of making the point that I think the game could be a bit more adventurous in that respect)

Seriously, I'd also say: crowbar, iron shield, screwdriver, stone hammer, maybe file, followed a long way later by any weapons.

I would have to go with:

Bone knife
Stone hammer
Needle

As being the top three, because they're the most basic tools needed to make anything else... everything else like a crowbar and sabre and iron shield are only secondary, especially considering your average newspawn definitely won't be using or having access to those (the crowbar least of all). They are important things, but not until you're older since they're not exactly easy to get ahold of in every area.

There is a great increase of gathering output with a scythe really. It's a really effective tool when gathering spot caps are in place. :)

Before there was a wiki I spent some time creating a note with a bunch of resource and iron information. (See Sho, I'm that kind of person  )
In some ways its easier to use then the wiki still. Somethin I had on it is the most usefull tools(used for the most resources). First: Shovel, second:sickle, third:pickaxe.

I am very interested in iron and steel so the shovel and pickaxe I like. I have four char with pickaxes and for three of them its their best weapon. (fourth was...lucky)

1. BONE KNIFE!!!

I don't think anything else can be made without it, it's probably the only thing you can make in the desert before making anything else
