And all I'm saying is that if someone is going to get in a long conversation about something unimportant, why not say it out loud? (it's not really like you're using a loudspeaker or yelling, that would only happen if you typed in all caps. Hearing everything in a single area is normal for Cantrians.) Would anyone honestly find a little talk about a trading deal or whatever more of a 'burden' than a long list of whispers? most would probably be glad to have a break from all the exciting hunting and adding things to projects. Whispering over and over again is about as irritating as knocking over and over again, I think.

Besides, if it's just 'drivel', it looks pretty strange to be huddled in a corner whispering about it like it's something important, and probably gives everyone the wrong idea, besides just being annoying. Cantr isn't like real life where you can tune things out, your chars still get lit up and you still have to read everything whether a person is whispering to another or saying something out loud.

But what if they don't want to say it out loud? What if they don't care about hearing what everyone else thinks or giving everyone else a chance to comment on what they only mean for one person to comment on? What if the char is a very shy char that will scarcely speak out loud and much prefers to speak quietly and one on one? Just because it's not necessarily importantly secretive stuff doesn't mean that the char doesn't have the right to be quiet about it.

You don't hear everything people say in their conversations in a crowded room. You hear the drone of voices and catch a phrase or two but you don't hear each and every single word said by all the people. The chars may still light up and you see them whispering, but that's the equivalent of droning voices in the background in a crowded room. And I'd argue that you can tune out. You see a list of people whispering, you barely glance over it because you recognise it as whispering. That's tuning it out. Your char probably won't say anything. That's tuning it out.

Don't look at it as huddled. Look at it as two people standing and talking across the room. You can see them talking, you can hear their voices carry from time to time maybe. Not really very suspicious.

And the thing about the trading, I mentioned, it's not something everyone wants to broadcast. It's something that should be kept private if one wishes and whispering is the way to do that. I'm sorry, I'm just a very private person, no matter how impersonal the actual information is. Though, I don't consider financial things very impersonal.

Not true. Booths in most restaurants are in an open room. You still hear the voices of the people, you still see the people and can observe their behaviour. Okay, if that's not good enough, instead of a booth, put the people at the bar with other people. They're not going to speak loud enough about everything that everyone else at the bar, even someone next to them, will necessarily hear. And most people wouldn't listen in, hanging on every word, anyway, especially if they have their own conversation going.

And I could go on and on and on... but that's not what this thread is about. I hate seeing a lot of whispering too, but I'm not going to assume too much about it. My char might if they think it involves them. Just because it annoys me as a player though, doesn't mean that I'm against it because there are reasons for it other than the one people always assume it is.

And unfortunately I can't think of any words to get this back on track... ehm... new words anyone?

I tend to equate the restaurant booth analogy exactly the opposite as hermit intends. In noisy towns, my charries just skip over everything that isn't referring to them. This is what I do in a restaurant: I ignore the other tables. The analogy is bad, because I can choose to listen in a restaurant if I want to (and have, incidentally).

The main reason I speak in whispers is in situations where I know that speaking out loud will elicit questions that I don't want to answer from people that have no right to ask them. There is this pervasive feeling in Cantr that anything said out loud is open to debate/discussion by anyone that hears it. If we can quash that attitude, we can start speaking out loud more often.
