And why does this char think those laws are complicated? Compared to what? A char spawning in such an area probably thinks that's the normal way to do things ...

Surely your charracter shouldnt drag sleepers outside or leave them inside unless there is a legit reason IG to take either course of action...?

Chars inside buildings are counted for the spawning. But I agree with Phalynx ;) ...

They might think it's normal and only hope they can find more simplified laws elsewhere, but if it's confusing and all they see is, "if you do this except in case of law 32- die; if you do that except in cases of law 80, appendix 345B- die" then certainly, they should move on if it is their wish to not remain confused for too long. Some poor little chars are easily confused and if the main word they see is "die" or "punishible by death," they're gonna hightail it out of there. :)

Anyhoo, that's not to say that every char you spawn should run away from those sorts of places. If the char is supposed to be pretty smart or at least average, they should be able to muddle through and give those laws a try and see what comes of it. Complicated laws don't mean that there's no chance for things to become really interesting there!

Most certainly not :) ... I guess people consider the constitution in Quillanoi 'complicated', but I think it creates the whole game there ...

I find this line of reasoning interesting. I mean, what's to say that a newspawn must think that the dominant political order in his spawntown is the normal one, and not have any desire to change it or move to find something better. It's not like people haven't been willing to change politics IRL.

(Note that Jos is probably more well-read than me regarding these things. ;) )

I'd say, as soon as the word "die" gets mentioned, all bets are off. Any character can be assumed to know that death is A Very Bad Thing, and that any rule advocating it is not necessarily good. As an example, one of my characters was attacked by the local tribe leader for saying that they might meet again. Should he not have found this odd (the tribe leader was pretty much all there was in the way of a ruler of the surrounding locations)?

And if someone spawns in our favourite beating bag - the Lad Empire - and runs off when they are told to "work or die", well gee, maybe Lad shouldn't threaten to kill people if they want to be liked.
(For the record, I'd probably like Lad. I play a bunch of subservient wimps anyway.)

Lad is the only place where a character of mine has spawned and wanted to leave the minute he saw the laws...

He was clever enough to leave following the rules (I can't remember what they were now but I think they involved him doing a lot of grovelling to an arrogant *&@£)

Yeah, but IRL, haven't they usually heard about neighbouring system before they think about changing theirs? How many people actually came up with a totally new idea for a political system? And those are remembered centuries later :) ...

And I'm not saying chars should accept all system immediately. But it would be nice if they stuck around, gradually learned more about other systems, gradually start to see that some things are not working properly, rather than just immediately think that the whole world must be better than this place, or let alone decide that those 5 laws are too 'complicated' :)

My dissertation subject is the diffusion of democracy - i.e. people learning from neighbours about their political attitudes and then changing their regime - I certainly hope I'm a bit more well-read on this than most Cantr players ;) ...

I suppose I can agree to that. But you're dealing with players here. If they see a bunch of complicated laws, or are threatened with death, they'll know there are better alternatives. And I wouldn't say it's bad RP (like some do, not necessarily Jos) to assume that IG as well.

Besides, there's also the OOC concept that there are up to 15 characters being run by one person. Maybe that one person doesn't want to keep track of a new huge set of laws, but rather find an IG reason to move to the quiet forest town nearby. (The reason why I actually think it's a good thing that hunting laws et al are similar in most towns.)

And whoa on the dissertation. Yeah, you're more well read than me, at least. :)

I like the kind of government with very few rules like 1)don't kill other players 2) don't steal 3) don't kill animals with 3 or less
and that kind of basic stuff

I have also seen places with taxes on certain resorses like wood - I wonder who those resorses go to? :?:

Some of my characters would love the towns with lots of confusing laws that generally end in death, because as far as they are concerned, if they play it straight for a little while then because the town is so based on those who are known and liked and killing everyone else the moment they get warmed to they are going to get promoted to some position of power

where they can kill the newspawns :D

I can say my char wasn't any menace to the town (he wore a bone knife and nothing else), and I suppose that the brokeen law was "state your name and the charge you have to trade".
Well... thinking a bit, I suppose that kind of goverment is Mob Gang. They jail anyone not equipped with a crowbar and wait, with the hope of stealing all his possessions. It looks efficient...

You really think that a government with the local capability to make a building, lock, crowbars, etc, is active trying to kill you to get your bone knife?

Wow. Paranoia.

Not, maybe my 10 kilo of iron ore.

But Neko was right, they are the Barons, and the city was not builded by them.
