Stone spearhead

Postby Pie » Sun Mar 26, 2006 10:01 pm

Ever heard of the clovis? Well, why not this in canter? a ston e spearhead, to make it so that you kan make a spear without having to be able to kill an animal. This will make it so that new comunitys with acces to stone will be able to kill animals quicker.

cool, huh?

Well, they could use stone cleavers already, which have the additional benefits of not using any wood and being convertible into stone axes later on - using wood in this case, of course ;)

If you want to introduce another simple weapon with little use of resources, a simple wooden spear would make more sense. Those have been used pretty much throughout history and are pretty easy to make (although they usually are hardened by fire in reality).

Fishing spear. All you need is wood, no tools and you can poke people with it too.
Reality was never my strong point.

I would say it was a good idea but like Heiner said, we have stone cleavers now, and those are actually more useful than a stone spearhead would be since you don't need wood for a shaft before you can use it.

Well, let's see. Assuming we want an analogy to the bone spear, the following is needed:
Damage above 15 (to beat the throwing star, which uses only wood) but below 22 (what the bone spear does, to encourage upgrading). 20 or 21 feels about right.
Uses a stone spearhead (which is made from just stone, unlike the bone spearhead which requires a knife).
Also uses a medium wooden shaft. Anything else is pretty unrealistic. Problem is, the shaft requires a (bone) knife. Stone knives have been suggested, I think. Or maybe the stone cleaver could be reconfigured to serve as a knife (but that would make it powerful).
Anyway, those two are hammered together with a hammer. No problem there.

Heck, that could be made to work.

And for those who suggest pure wood weapons - thoses exist and and are pitifully weak. The apache throwing star does 15, which is ok, I suppose, but something stronger would be nice.

No happer requierd, i mean, IRL, you could just split the wood WITH the stone spearhead, and you don't need a hammer.

I like Hellon's description. That is a good idea. Another useful tool to survive on the wild world :)

The apache throwing star is far overpowered, and it will almost certainly be reduced. The bone spear is slightly overpowered and might see a reduction of a point or three. I am thinking that an attack power of 17 (which is the same as the atlatl) would be about right for a stone spear if it were to become reality. As was noted however, you need already need a knife, so there is little to be gained from such a weapon.

Actually, with a bone knife, in an undeveloped comunity, finding more bone(if you don't have enough after making the knife,)Its pretty hard to make any more spears, or anything, for that matter.

Seems a good follow-up to the stone axe. Admittedly the axe needs sinew, but this need not. (and the axe seems very popular.)
