wool string

Postby Marian » Sun Mar 19, 2006 1:34 am

How come wool and silk and cotton and hemp are treated basically the same (can all be made into yarn, then made into cloth) except when it comes to making string? If you can make yarn out of something you should be able to make string, too, it's practically the same thing, only thinner.

Right now there's at least one entire island with no way to make string...honestly I don't remeber if there's even sheep there, anyway, but it's besides the point. It just doesn't make sense for wool string to be impossible. (Especially if you can make it out of HEMP.)

Also, why can't sinew be used for more things? If you can make violin strings out of it in RL it must be pretty strong. MAybe if you cured it first? I'm not really sure how it was actually used, someone should be able to find it on Google though.

So nobody cares either way? I'd have though there'd at least be people saying it was lame or unbalanced or something by now. :)

I do agree.. I've always wondered why you can't turn wool yarn into string...

I think it makes sense that you can make rope out of cotton, hemp or silk, but not wool. Wool would not be a good material for rope - too sensitive to humidity. And under the current system anything that can be made into string can be made into rope.

Most of the discussion about modifying wool as focused around wool cloth. I am not sure about the realism of it. Like Sho says, any string can be made in to rope, right now, but I don't see much reason why wool shouldn't work. It is fibrous, should have the same left handed triple-helix molecular structure with glycine rich repeats. I doubt that it makes good rope in real life, though I haven't researched it much.

If we do add it, it would likely be much less efficient than hemp (which is actually probably the largest sources of natural rope fibres in the world, if I am not mistaken :) ), but it might serve as a subsitute.

And I believe we could eventually get those sinew violin strings worked into the game world.
