Isn't it simply because the cache buffers have to fill after each database restart? If you backup just before "rush hours" the process of filling the memory is painfull for all the players...

... Graphs of the server bandwidth usage over the past years shows a very gradual increase from around 4 Gb/day to about 6 Gb/day over the past year, and then suddenly it peaks to 20/30 Gb/day in the past few weeks. That has nothing to do with player activity

...

We're attempting strategies to remove this problem and we received some extra donations (thank you!!) to cover the extra costs, so chances are that we don't have to close for a few days. Can't promise anything, though, until I know better what we can do about the problem.

Yea, first bad lag time I guess.. there have still been laggy times though... but not quite so bad as earlier today..
