I am bringing this topic back.
We should do this! Either this idea or the burning one but notes should destructable. There are so many useless notes out there that have not any meaning to the current state of things and really should be gotten rid of.
Now the trash idea with envelopes is cool but some notes (especially if you don't want people accidently reading them) should have a way of destroying them.

I'm all in favour! Some of my chars have envelopes full of useless notes, and some copied lots of times and not editable. And it's also a pain when I set a note to be non editable and then I find out it has errors. I have to keep the old note anyway.
Here's my idea:
When you set a note to non editable, it gains a signature just like when you seal an envelope. The diference is that a sealed envelope cannot be opened, meaning you can't see it's contents, while a signed note can be read by everyone. This is quite handy if you want to start using oficial documents, like a building deed that must be signed by the town leader. Or a credit note or something. What's the point of putting a credit note in a sealed envelope if the person who receives it cannot check it's contents whithout breaking the seal?
And with this, all notes and envelopes should become destructable. If you want to preserve history, just copy them and put them in a library.

This is already in game (seals), but you need complex resources for it, and afaik, it isn't being used yet. Making it free would really be a bummer for those poor chars that are sending out gathering parties...
As for destroying, Jos has always been fervently opposed to it, but he may have changed his stance.

No!
It would result in such a headache - either for characters to sort out or for ProgD/RD
There would have to be a way to make sure that it's difficult to destroy notes - otherwise anyone could walk in and pick up all the notes and burn them / tear them
If destroying notes is done as a project, the project should be reversible and the notes reclaimable - see point above
I really don't understand what everyone's hatred of notes is based on?
If you destroy them, you'll have to spend time doing that.
If people are annoyed and having to sift through loads of unwanted notes, that won't change if you can destroy them.
Why not just spend time putting unwanted notes into an envelope?
I really don't think this is needed in any form.
Notes as fuel makes zero sense - have you ever burnt a newspaper?
Go and do that, then tell me you can cook something with paper as fuel...

How about graffiti?
You see a man in his twenties spraypaint 'f*ck the police' onto the wall of Town Hall.
Sorry, no..
Notes can be a pain though and it would be more realistic if they could be destroyed. It'd probably be a fairly arduous task, but it could be made that until 30 days have passed, only the creator of the note can destroy it. 5 days could be better though.
There could be a pointed stick used to collect the notes. A screen comes up with tickboxes for which notes to pick up and the task takes a while. Help create jobs in Cantr!

What if notes worked like tools did? After-all, what document do we have in real life that doesn't deteriorate if not well cared for?
lol
*Shoots herself for saying that.*
Maybe then the librarians of the Cantr world would actually have something to do besides sit there and look pretty.

Note thieves will become note rippers, but with the current system you can kill the thief and get your notes back.
Well, just backup all the important notes. That way you won't even have to run after note thieves.
****
Come on guys,.. this not about realism or not,... it's about flexibility. If you want to keep important documents, make copies and store them somewhere safe, like your own pocket, and give copies to those who care about them. But please allow people who want to destroy their own notes to do it. It's not fair that I can't destroy a personal message just because other people think history should be undestructable.

I have yet to see a really good reason as to why it's more important that a note is destroyed, than is just in an envelope?
If you have an overflowing note page in town or in your inventory, use an envelope.
For (Cantr) decades I've kept one of the busiest towns tidy, with rarely more than five notes on the ground at one time.
It takes almost no time at all. Destroying notes would take longer, so I'd still just put them in envelopes, which is instantaneous.

Actually for those Libraries I have a suggestion to make those notes less stealable but copy griefers will also have a hard time... glass cases mounted on the wall where a note can be read but not taken or copied without the key for the case... to make it easy on the object limit perhaps one glass case can hold limitless notes. Obviously people could still cut and paste and copy but the casual copy griefer couldn't just press the copy button over and over again to start.
I guess the code for the glass case would be something akin to an invisible immoble envelope with a lock.

Guys, let's think about this for just a split second.
I will make my point simple.
If you fear losing an important note,
Why is it uncopied, on the ground?
