Eavesdropping

Postby T-shirt » Sat Mar 11, 2006 9:18 pm

I would be cool to be able to eavesdrop on a person. While eavesdropping, your character will overhear any conversation that person has with others or others have with that person.
It should be possible to detect someone eavesdropping, but it should not be too obvious; it could for example be stated in the character's description:

He is in his twenties and is eavesdropping on a woman in her thirties. He wears nothing worth mentioning.

I think it should be said on the events screen because it is fairly obvious when a person is eavesdropping on you and you should only be able to eavesdrop on one person at a time.

Other then those 2 tweaks I think your idea is good.

I like it, everything in Cantr is so out in the open or completely secret. And I like it only being visible on the character description too. Anytime I’ve done any ease-dropping I was pretty discrete about it, not something you could figure out in a passing glance, but I’m sure that if people paid more attention to me they could have figured it out. Plus, I’m in support of moving the game onto more pages then just the events page (unless it’s a laggy day, then I want as few pages as possable, but those don't come around to often).

EDIT: Making an event out of it would defeat the purpose, the person you're ease-dropping would stop whispering if they knew you were listening to them. I’d even be a little leery about putting it on the activities screen. I'd really love to see stuff happen in the town square that isn't noticed by everyone.

I hate the idea, it would ruin the very little privacy you get at the moment in cantr

This idea would encourage building use. Wouldn't it? That's another plus.

no no no no no..... you can have a private conversation in real life without having to walk into a building to do it! Not to mention often when whispering to somebody you need to talk to other people at the same time. And some things you just don't want people to hear! And building are a rubbish idea anyway as someone can just follow you in, and needing a lock means that having a private conversation is something only reserved for richish or powerfulish people, and nobody in poorer starting out communities can have them. I actually despise this idea

I think this idea has potential. It would be completely possible to work around eavesdropping - even an unlocked building would suffice (if you see someone come in, stop talking). Even better, it will probably not be possible to eavesdrop on the road (seems like it would be difficult to code), so you can just step out on a road and have your important conversation there - this costs you only a few hours and is available to all.

Sho, useually when you whisper you will also be talking to other people as well, and so walking out onto the road will completely stop any communication making people extremely unlikely to do it, I say if the game was designed to let people have some privacy in the completely open world in front of the locked doors lets keep it that way and try not to make everything open information to everybody

Yeah, but I'm still thinking about tape recorders. An item, which we can leave somewere and it will record all conversations. Only problem is "whose voice is speaking?" when listening.

The point would be to make guaranteed private conversation a luxury that you would have to put some effort into getting. In my experience most whispering is done not because there would be life-threatening consequences for a breach of privacy, but because the characters want to emphasize the directedness of what they are saying - whispering is much simpler than an emote, as in "*turning to <character>* Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet." People would still do most of their private conversation the old way, but if they had to do any serious plotting they would use a building or a path. A building is already nearly a requirement for private discussion between multiple characters.

Yeah, I like it, there should be two separate options: talk to (someone) and whisper to (someone) I must agree that most of private talks are becouse we just want to say something to a specific person.

... and if your message should not be overheard in any way, write it down and pass the message.

Eavesdropping can also be good; whisper to your comrades to listen. All will come close, 'eavesdrop', and will hear the next whispered conversations.

In real life if someone is eavesdropping on you and you don't want them to you either write a note, walk away from them, do nothing about it, or hit/push them away from you. The same can go for Cantr.
